Classic Video Thread (pre-2008)

Recommended Posts

You never know what you are going to find. I say this, because I came across something rare. WCBI-TV in Tupelo had a reporter named Dan Black and here are a few reports. While scanning through the video, I noticed the first moments of a WCBI newscast from 1979 with news open. You can view the news open with newscast at 4:26.

Enjoy this rare piece of video.

More rare video...this time, in Jackson, Tennessee. WBBJ-TV had a sports director named Jack Church and is featured in this video. There is no news open, but features a sportscast from Jack himself.

Oh, wait. Jack Church also worked for WCBI-TV in Tupelo. Here's more of him from the early 1980s.

A KTVX report from around fall 1991 - I estimated it to be the fall due to the logo on the L3’s (which, at the earliest, was being used in August) and the presence of Phil Riesen (who left the station in October).

WJCL's logo in the mid-90s was a...KCBS ripoff, just with one more "2". No open or music though:

These WVTV movie bumpers from 1986 use associated cuts of the KTLA/KSTW/etc. theme...

And here's a KARK newscast at 6:00 from 1985:

I was about to post that KARK newscast, you beat me to it. And on that WJCL clip, the reason there was only a 5pm newscast mentioned because JCL didn't have late news back then (they carried Married with Children reruns at 11pm).

The original Ellis/EQ Vance open to WUPW's 10pm news, were they possible the first non Hearst station to use Image News?

That KARK Open was copied from former sister station WXIA in Atlanta. What’s odd is that they snagged that open right after Gannett sold them (I believe; a 1983 blooper reel shows the news set in this video being built).

And I’m assuming ‘JCL didn’t air 11pm news at the time cause they were being beaten in the ratings by “THE News” at WTOC...

WJCL must had changed, because in the late 90s into 2000s they only had a 6/11pm news. Glad somebody did clarified.

Looks like WJCL had only a 6pm news in 1992, when they were known still as Newswatch 22:

Lewis Broadcasting sold WJCL in 1998 for $19 million to Grapevine Communications LLC of Atlanta, a private equity firm. The improvements to WJCL must have come in preparation for or after the sale.

I already posted that.

When did you do it? I must not have seen it. But I know how much you hate when people post things you already did, so I'll delete if you want.
