Classic Video Thread (pre-2008)

I don't think this WTAJ news open has been shared. The news open is seen at 17:40 and is a custom version of the classic Tom Sellers "Action News" theme done by Frederick Morden.

Here is a WJHL news promo from 1985 with an unknown theme. Sounds like Tuesday Productions or Network Music?

How about more WJHL? This, to me, sounds like a TM Productions piece.

From Miami, a look back at WAMI's alternative newscast, as seen on the last-ever edition in late 2000:

And here's a CNN report about WAMI's alternative news:

From France, Antenne 2's national evening news on today' s date 40 years ago:

I like how Antenne 2's opening sequence was always a bit different. A few days later, for example, the cameras followed the anchor as he made his way to the set from above:

Staying in France, but going five years further back in time, here's the news from ORTF's First Network on today's date in 1972:

Here's the last of the Phoenix stuff I've found... There may be more, but right now, I have a whole bunch of other things in the queue.

Very interesting— by this time KPNX was phasing out the TVbD graphics for some newer ones, but the old graphics are still used for the L3’s.

KPNX for some reason used cold opens for their weekend news, never understood why. This probably must’ve been temporary on purpose, because exactly a year later they debuted “News Station”. I still think Wow & Flutter were responsible for the 1992 theme...

This is a real weird transitional look. TVbD elements in some places (the station ID, the "12 NEWS SUNDAY" text in the open) but the new theme music, stone textured graphics and set.

It is worth noting here that "12 News At This Hour" cut-ins continued to use the The Coast theme after this new look was fully implemented.

Their weeknight 6:00 also had a cold open, though the clip for it is *long* gone. (The other 1992 Sunday newscast is a good stand-in.) Only a few newscasts seemed to have had full opens in the post-TVbD era in 1992-93.

Why KPNX was airing a 7pm newscast on a Sunday evening?

KPNX ran Wonderful World of Disney from 5-7pm, rather than 6-8pm (as was done in Central Time zone). I believe at that time, when the NFL ran long, Disney was "joined in progress", thus a 7pm newscast guaranteed that they full half hour (+ the full Nightly News West Coast feed) ran in their entirety.

Just dying to know what the news on ORTF's Second Network looked like on this day in 1973? Here's YouTube to the rescue:

Great stuff...but I couldn't help but put my four years of French to work here. As the names are La Première and La Deuxième Chaîne, the names are correctly translated as the First and Second Channel, rather than First and Second Network. (The term for network is réseau - TVA of Quebec calls itself as such, dating back to when they were a cooperative like CTV.)

Meanwhile, back in the plains, 6 and 10 PM opens from KOLN/KGIN, featuring series 2 of Making a Difference in all its 90's glory.

WOKR in 1987...

WHO in 1989...

A March 1994 KPNX tease with Sean McLaughlin (!) and Ron Hoon (!):

Not news material, but certainly rare. ASPN (not a typo!) was something of Arizona's first RSN, as it had the rights to the Suns and high school football telecasts (it's the predecessor to what's now YurView Arizona in that regard):
