Classic Video Thread (pre-2008)

Well that was cheesy...and unusual. Was the station in that much risk of losing their network?

Cheezy indeed... But It wasn't just because Disney owned ABC that they used the Mouse in the video... You see, the controlling shareholder in Shamrock Broadcasting was Roy Disney.....Yes Walt's Brother.

Disney didn't come to own ABC until 7 years after this promotional video was produced. Mickey was used solely because of the ownership by Roy Disney.

Well that would explain some of it.

WTVQ 1989 - The model affiliate. When they were trying to keep their ABC affiliation.

[snip]

That has got to be the strangest rendition of Hello I've ever heard. I wonder if they actually used it outside of this (which really does amount to sucking up to the network...).

KNDO in 1984...no open but given the close in the second part of the clip, this would probably be their theme. Interesting use of the NBC News globe animation of the time!

WLS's legendary "Just Themselves" promo from the early 1970s:

Who were the anchors parodied in this promo? My guesses:

1.) A generic late '20s / early '30s radio announcer

2.) Walter Winchell

3.) John Cameron Swayze (Camel News Caravan) with a bit of Douglas Edwards thrown in (especially his looks)

4.) Chet Huntley

From the "it ain't broke, don't fix it" file: Here is a news open from 1998 (yes, 1998) from flagship CTV station CFTO in Toronto. This was after CTV bought the Baton stations. This was only a few months after they rebranded as CFTO News from the NightBeat/World Beat brand with the set/image that dates back to 1988 but before the first incarnation of the Leak look/"big screen" set that was unveiled by winter (not 1999 as previously stated), from the looks of Rewind Eats The Tapes' clips. There is a few clips that channel from Citytv and Global:

From the look of the two clips, they switched to the Paul Hoffert theme/graphics the same time as CP24 launched (in 1998) and not 1997, as I previously thought.
