"60 Minutes" question

Something I'd like to know about "60 Minutes"-- one of its trademarks was that its stories were/still are introduced with backdrops resembling magazine stories on the same subjects. Back in the day, these backdrops looked like flat 2-D representations, but nowadays, they seem to have more depth to them and look more like real opened-up magazines. What I'd like to know is, were the original 2-D representations made from some kind of posterboard and illustrated to achieve the desired effect? Attached is an example of the original from 1986.
