Importing the Network News Helicopter to America

BBC, Sky News (Sister Network of FOX News (America)) and Australian Networks Abroad all have news helicopters. How about importing that idea here to America?

One Helicopter for the headquarters in New York, one copter for the Main Bureau in Washington, and one for each of the other bureaus (Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami).

I don't think it's necessary with the close relationship between the affils (or in most cases, the O&Os) in those markets. What would the nets use a chopper for that the local stations aren't? Why spend more money when they can just pull the feed from one of their own stations?

Well BBC doesn't have that much area to cover (land wise), compared to the United States. For the helicopters to work, networks would have to many stationed through out the country. This is wasted money, when they can easily just go to video footage from a local station's helicopter.

As for the Australian helicopters, doesn't their regional/local stations use those as well? To me those mainly seem to serve the regional/local areas.

I don't think you can compare the two areas. Over there, everything is owned by each network. It's not like each local station has one, the helicopters are pretty much the only ones each network has.

Most of the breaking news requiring a chopper happens in big cities where network either has an O&O or a strong affiliate, which already has a chopper where they can pull video from.

As part of the contract the stations sign with the chopper operator the crews only work a set number of hours each month. If for some extremely wacky odd reason network wanted the chopper for an extended period of time (3 hours or more) without local breaking news that the affiliate is already breaking in for, then network would likely foot the bill (which they don't really want to do).

Otherwise as a part of the requirements to be an affiliate, stations are required to share video it already have. For example if station X is an ABC affiliate and a CNN affiliate and it is covering a major fire with the chopper live for the newscast. The video would be put into the server for ABC NewsOne for every ABC affiliate in the country and CNN Newsource for every CNN affiliate in the country (embargoed for CNN affiliates in the DMA).

Therefore buying a chopper for network use would be unnecessary and wasteful at a time when networks are strongly trying to cut costs across the board.
