Reusing graphics packages

Have you ever seen situations where several stations in different markets (in most cases, also with the same owner), reuse simliar graphics when they do redesigns or in general?

From what I know:

  • Liberty stations all shared the exact same VDO package (with a blue, yellow, and red color scheme)
  • Gannett is using very simliar Giant Octopus graphics on 3 different stations that have gone HD lately (WUSA, WXIA, and KSDK), although KDSK's graphics have a slightly darker and orangier red in their color scheme.

Raycom stations (I like this package), by VDO.TV: WIS, WSFA, etc.

That's the package made for the Liberty stations, the Liberty stations are now owned by Raycom and are using that package.

I know Raycom was using this station group graphics package for a while, WECT dumped it in 2005...

I'd say McKinnon's RWB scheme graphics, but even that seems to be more diffuse these days. KBMT is using something totally different than KIII, and the only thing that KIII has from the original Graphics package these days are the L3s. KIII's have actually gotten... more simplistic and less appealing if you can believe that.

Then again, I think it's sad KIII had to send some of their graphics people to San Diego in the first place for their design tutorials when they moved into their new studios... but that's another story.

Well, It is sad that McKinnon is so cheap. these graphic artists havent really done a good job in San Diego. KUSI is cheap, it sucks and most of all their graphics resemble those of a 100+ market, not to mention McKinnon sold the building that was suppose to house the new KUSI studios. :-[ It is back to square one for KUSI :-\

  • 1 month later...

Here's an interesting one, WTVG (abc o&o in Toledo) uses a slight variation on KABC's old graphics, abelt with a few changes, adjustments, and touch-up's here and there...

  • The L3's are a bit smaller, and all L3 based graphics (except the Live bug) follow a smaller tile safe zone
  • Bit nicer+smaller font
  • Breaking News tab isn't a gradient
  • 13abc logo instead of ABC 7 logo (of course)
  • Branded as Action News instead of Eyewitness News
  • Time/Temp bug during all newscasts
  • Cute spinning logo (also less ugly)

Ironically speaking, WTXL in Tallahassee and WWSB in Sarasota (both ABC affiliates in Florida, owned by Southern Broadcasting) used WTVG's old Giant Octopus graphics. Can't really say if they were done by GO, but they are quite similar.
