WKRG's New Graphics

The first sign of new newscast graphics came when TV5’s new on-screen logo/clock appeared on the right side of the screen during “The Montel Williams Show” this afternoon. It looks like their current logo, only smaller and it has the time and station temperature in a dark bar graphic (transparent on both ends) that stretches out more than the logo.

The newscast graphics made their full debut at 5:00 PM. The graphic for reports “coming up” now has titles; even the weather forecast preview has titles such as “Stormy Night” in all capital letters. “Live from WKRG News 5, coverage you can count on at 5:00 PM”, said announcer Chris Clausen as the words “live” and “WKRG News 5” appeared respectively among the bright animated graphics. Most of the colors consist of blue, orange, and yellow.

The names of both regular news presenters, including off duty presenter Rose Ann Haven, appeared below Mel Showers. The graphic stretches to both sides of the screen, with the right side of the graphic stretching to the bottom of the screen. Box graphics with the presenters in different areas of the studio are now larger. “WKRG Studio” now appears under the news presenter’s box. “Weather Center” has been retained.

Viewers got to see new map graphics (they are now green instead of yellow) for certain reports, where they can insert a subject’s image on the map, a new animated “breaking news” graphic, and an slightly larger over the shoulder graphic with the inserted news story graphic taking the most space. The rest of the graphic is animated.

The weather maps remain the same, but other forecast graphics such as the 5-day forecast have a mixture of white, light blue, dark blue, and orange for weekend temperatures.

In some graphics, such as those that feature a subject’s photograph, the TV5 logo (which is yellow and white) blends in with the yellow “light” in the background graphic. The word “live” in red letters fits well in the yellow section of the byline graphic for reporters.

Though they may be flashy, the new graphics are impressive for their animation and word use. They fit the overall appearance of TV5’s newscasts today. If I were to change one thing about the new graphics is the inclusion of the time and temperature under the logo during non-network programming. It’s odd seeing the current time and temperature at the beginning of “The Andy Griffith Show” after the 6:00 PM newscast.

What a riveting account.....you had me in suspense until the very end! A simple "WKRG got the MG graphics" would definitely not have the same entertainment value as this.....
