The worst news opens of all time

Recommended Posts

OK, there are a bunch of stations out there with this graphics package, mine included and it can be done well and not so much... This one is the latter...

Really? Using the "Live" bug for when the announcer says "live"?

EDIT

And an even worse version:

That has to be the strangest cut of The Tower I've ever heard.

Two nominations, but only one video, I'm afraid.

There is a channel called MyChannel that broadcasts on the Sky Digital platform here in the UK, and it has recently started it's own news programme. Called MyNews, it's a ham amateurish effort that makes my Viewpoint productions look half decent. It airs 4 times a day, at 1300, 1900, 2230 and 1000 the next morning. Sadly, or perhaps thankfully, there are no videos up on YouTube or anywhere else about this.

At the other end of the scale, Sky News new look which came in with HD on Election Day here in the UK, is quite frankly awful. Far too flighty.

I think we have a winner... I'm not sure whether it's the Casio theme music, the "A-ha"-esque sketches or the sportscaster giving a thumbs up, but this is definitely one of the strangest news opens I've ever seen.

I think you're right, what the hell is up with that open?

Wayne Havrelly seems to be amused by his empty plastic beta case. That typewriter on Meeghan Black's desk is even really old for 1993..

I can't believe that's the same Monty Webb that was at WBBM 10 years ago..

I'm strangely alright with it. Yes it is cheesy, but it's very 90's and (those of you who are old enough to remember the early 90's) will recall that the 90's were very cheesy in general.

Speaking of cheesy and very 90's, here's one from 1991. It sounds more like a talk show open than a news open.

When you use an open too long and need to modify it...this happens.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHea_xnnGms (4:22 – the original)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUqKCYTX80U (13:05 – heavily modified)

WTEN Albany heavily edited its original open from the early 2000s and still uses it.

*Added digital IDs.

*Cut out the middle portion.

*New music package and voiceover.

*Watch it loop at the end (when Scott Chapin says "The News Station").

WJCL/WTGS Savannah GA

Not as bad as some of them.. but.....

That one's not too bad. Weird, but not terrible. Isn't their whole news presentation since becoming "The Coastal Source" non-traditional?

I noticed that since then, from their website, WJCL has introduced a new look using graphics by John Christopher Burns.

jcbD and New Vision TV are getting really deep with each other...WKBN, KOIN, KIMT (there's no question in my mind about that one), and now WJCL.

The package is OK. Lots of green and blue, with some virtual set elements (for weather).

I'd like to see how he'd do KHON. I think that'd be one interesting look indeed.
