I think the graphics for WVBT are okay. They look nice. I have to say that Nicole Livas looks a little funny in the screen caps. I love her facial expressions. These are pretty sweet. Can we see any graphics from WAVY?

It looks like WHDH is going to flip to HD today at noon, softly...with a "harder" launch at 4PM.

I can tell you, it's going to be...interesting.

They sure did after the original date of July 15th was put off. Almost everything was changed.

They are 2nd in Boston behind WCVB, and 3rd in New England behind WFFF.

Here's more from VARTV.com about WWBT going HD...

:// WWBT FIRST IN RICHMOND TO LAUNCH HIGH DEFINITION LOCAL NEWS AND WEATHER

pad.gif | Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Another first for WWBT NBC12 when this week we mark the beginning of NBC12 News in High Definition, leading the way in the era of HD local news and weather for Central Virginia viewers. With an extensive upgrade to the NBC12 Master Control and Studio operation, NBC12 is now airing all of its local newscasts in High Definition. The most noticeable improvement for the viewer will be First Warning Weather in HD. The NBC12 First Warning Doppler Radar, Hour by Hour forecast and Severe Weather tracking maps will all be clearer and easier to read. “This is the most advanced weather technology on TV today” explains Andrew Freiden, NBC12 meteorologist.

“We were proud to be the first broadcaster in Central Virginia to sign on with an HD signal in late 2001 and along with the NBC line up we are now delivering Richmond’s number one news and weather with the technical quality and picture our viewers expect ,” says Don Richards, General Manager. “This launch is timed with the upcoming Olympics Games from Bejing. The biggest HD broadcast event on television.”

The Olympics on NBC12 will begin with Opening ceremonies on Friday night August 8 at 8pm and conclude 17 days later –broadcast 100% in High Definition. Viewers can access full schedules of events and times at www.nbc12.com.

Here's some WAVY caps. Sorry there's so many, I heart HD screencaps. WAVY's 1080i is much more clearer than WVBT's 720p when viewed up-close...

I must say, the set looks very slick in HD.

The WAVY/WVBT graphics and set look pretty good. If I lived in the Hampton Roads area, I'd most likely be watching at least WVBT on a regular basis.

(I've had a soft spot for the area since I was down there for a job interview in 2005. I didn't see much of the area that day, but I did a lot of research on it. It's on the list of areas of the country that I'd seriously consider moving to if the right opportunity presented itself.)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports today that the transfer to HD local news at WTVR is on hold until the sale to Sinclair Broadcasting goes through. Their GM, Peter Maroney, said he anticipates that the station will broadcast its news in HD by the end of the year or early next year. WRIC's GM Bob Peterson said his station is working toward a HD broadcast of its local news shows, but no target date is established. WRLH's FOX News at Ten, produced by WWBT, is broadcast using the WRLH transmitter which is not equipped for HD. No word on WUPV.
