The HD News Thread

ETA: This is a fine idea. So fine, it deserves sticky status! -- Sammy

I've started this thread as a master HD news thread... instead of starting a new thread every time a station launches an HD newscast, why not pile all things regarding HD local news into one thread?

Here's a list of stations with news in HD, this will be continuously updated. If there are any errors in this list (I'm sure there are), please let me know. This list is in order by DMA rank (2009-2010 rankings) and the order each station debuted news in HD...

This list is out-of-date. The following stations are confirmed to have HD newscasts. Due to HD launches becoming more frequent and common, it has become difficult to maintain a master list. More stations in each market may have launched HD newscasts since last updated.

WHEN SUBMITTING INFORMATION ABOUT HD NEWS:

Your info will go under "HD soon" if it has been confirmed on-air or in a press release/article from a reliable source. If it's just a rumor or a case where "I talked to someone from the station and they said this," it will obviously go under "rumor mill." Anything from the "rumor mill" section must be taken with a grain of salt and may or may not be fact until proven otherwise. Rumor mill claims such as "WXXX added HD pillars so they might be going HD soon" do not count.

...and didn't KOMO have the world's first local HD newscast? WRAL was just the first station to broadcast an HD program.

KOMO's news is in widescreen SD.

WRAL was the first station to broadcast a digital signal with an experimental license in 1996, but didn't sign on WRAL-DT until later (I think).

WFAA was the first station to sign on with a digital channel that's still on today (WFAA-DT).

WRAL was the first station to do a local HD newscast in 2000.

Are you sure of that? When I looked up KOMO-TV in Wikipedia, it stated that they were producing the news in HD, and when I went to the KOMO website and checked their TV listings, they also indicated the newscast was in HD. I think you may be talking about KIRO, which produces its news in 16:9 SD.

Are you sure of that?

I'm actually not... I've heard that WRAL, KOMO, and WFAA were the first to do HD news. WRAL has claimed it on their website (October 2000), but I've also seen claims that KOMO is just widescreen SD.

From Wikipedia...

* KING 5 is the only station in the Seattle area broadcasting news in High Definition.

(There is confusion surrounding a claim from rival KOMO-TV which says it "became the first TV station in the world to broadcast daily local news in Digital High Definition." KOMO does not currently broadcast news in HD, although it experimented with HD news in 1999. The technology to broadcast news in HD had not been fully developed and KOMO news in HD was scrapped. KING is the only Seattle TV station airing HD news, although KOMO currently airs newscasts in 16x9 (widescreen) standard definition giving the appearance of High Definition. Additionally, this statement from KOMO also comes into conflict with claims from WFAA-TV (sister station of KING 5) which says it became the first TV station to broadcast its newscasts in HDTV in 1997, although WFAA now says it became the first Dallas TV station to regularly broadcast its news in HD in Feb. 2007.)

I'm getting that...

-KOMO was the first station to do a local newscast in HD in 1999, but decided to go to widescreen SD.

-WRAL did an HD newscast in October 2000, but was the first station to do all local newscasts, every day, in HD in January 2001.

-WFAA: ???

I realize that the KING Wikipedia article makes the claim that they are the only Seattle station broadcasting in HD but when I checked the KOMO website, they list their newscasts as being in HD. Here's an example:

04:00p-05:00p KOMO 4 News (HDTV)

05:00p-05:30p KOMO 4 News (HDTV)

05:30p-06:00p ABC World News with Charles Gibson - Network News

06:00p-07:00p KOMO 4 News (HDTV)

When I checked KIRO's website, they don't list their newscasts as being in HD, which is consistent with their Wikipedia article's claim they broadcast in 16:9 widescreen. I don' think KOMO would advertise their newscasts as HD on their web site if they weren't.

After all, it's not like the Wikipedia hasn't been found incorrect or had disinformation placed in it before.

I realize that the KING Wikipedia article makes the claim that they are the only Seattle station broadcasting in HD but when I checked the KOMO website, they list their newscasts as being in HD.

Well, everything on TBS-HD is listed as HD in my on-screen programming guide, but I can assure you that there hasn't been a shred of high definition programming on that channel since the NLCS ended a few weeks ago. KOTV's newscasts are also listed as "HD" on TitanTV.com's listings, but I don't think they have ever been in HD. Just like Wikipedia, don't always believe what you read in those TV listings pages.

There was an article somewhere online that quoted an engineer at KOMO as saying they only have a standard-definiton switcher in the production control room, so if that's the case, it is impossible for them to broadcast anything but standard definition. Finally, take a look at this screen shot that pretty much proves it's in 16:9 SD: http://www.feldoncentral.com/hdtv/KOMO/index.php?action=image&filename=komo.jpg. Sure, it looks good...but it's still SD.

Apparently WTWO/WFXW in HD will be coming soon. According to the November 2007 WTWO Newsletter, WFXW will be first to go HD by the time the 08 Superbowl rolls around, then WTWO will follow shortly. Here's the letter:

Football fans rejoice!

We’ve gotten your voicemails, your

emails, your snailmails and every

other possible kind of mail you could

send us.

Your message has been loud and

clear, “WE WANT HD!”. And we

want you to know that your prayers

and pleas have been answered.

We are beginning the first stages

of our HD rollout as you read this.

It’s a multi-million-dollar project

that involves extra space & bracing

for our tower, and tons of extra

equipment in our building.

You’ll see your first all-digital HD

signal from our sister station,

WFXW, just in time for the 2008

Su p e r b owl .

WTWO will

follow close

behind.

So if you

h a v e n ’ t

already, put a

new TV on your Christmas list.

But for those of you still on

rabbit ears, fear not. We

will not turn off our

analog signal until

F e b u a r y

2009.

I surely thought WTHI would be first.

It will be interestng to see when this thread's title gets changed to "Stations who still don't have news in HD". As an interesting note, what would be the biggest station without news in HD?

Like, DMA-wise?

I guess WNYW...

For big 3s, KNBC.

I think it'll be a few years before 75% of local newscasts are in HD.

WTSP updated their set earlier this week and it looks like they may be ready to go HD but I'm not sure.

WCMH in Columbus upgraded their set last month with a new desk and weather center. But no word on when they'll make the switch.

Milwaukee stations with news programming:

WTMJ-4 (NBC): Broadcasting NBC programming in HD, but no syndicated or locally originated HD programming. Will "make great strides towards" HD news by February 2009

WITI-6 (FOX): Broadcasting FOX programming in HD, but no syndicated or locally originated HD programming. No plans to take news HD, widescreen, or anything due to the station being for sale

WISN-12 (ABC): Broadcasting ABC programming in HD, but no syndicated HD programming. Has broadcast the "Big Bang" fireworks in HD for the last two years (with the assistance of WMVS/WMVT). No other locally originated HD programming. Will roll out HD news in February 2009

WDJT-58 (CBS): Broadcasting CBS programming in HD, but no syndicated or locally originated HD programming. Will work towards HD news "in the next year or two"

Milwaukee stations without news programming:

WMVS/WMVT (PBS): Broadcasting one station of mostly HD programming. Most if not all locally created programming is HD, and has worked with WISN-12 in the past to create HD programming for them.

WMVT-18 (CW): Broadcasting CW programming in HD, but no syndicated or locally originated HD programming.

WCGV-24 (MyNetworkTV): Broadcasting MyNetworkTV programming in HD, but no syndicated or locally originated HD programming.

Everyone else is broadcasting in digital, standard definition.

That open sucked...the "NEWS CENTER" didn't make a whole lot of sense seeing as it wasn't even in the v/o. No music either....

I don't think it sucked, it's just kinda weird... and there is music, you can barely hear it. It certainly beats the old MG open.
