WBZ, Boston (plays a "DUN! Da-dun-DA-dun" sound. Last time I watched that station (probably when it was still NBC, it wasn't playing any stupid musical chime). But WHY do the stations play them? It's SO annoying and unnecessary! My local affiliate, KFOR, started this practice about 20 years ago (when The New York Times Company still owned the station). KWTV used a chime to intro its seven-day for a time in the early 2000s, although it was limited to the morning and noon newscasts. Yes, they're meant to be an attention signal. However, that purpose is complicated by the fact that often times, the meteorologist/weather anchor usually continues talking as the chime is heard. Edited February 8 by T.L.
