Eight CBS Stations to Ditch CW and Go Independent This Fall

Considering the path the other CBS O&Os have gone, call letters in a box is probably more likely than not. It would easily slot into any CBS News (Local Name) graphics set.

At least there's only two-three stations (KBCW, WPCW, and maybe WUPA) that ever specifically ID'ed as CW in the calls, so there's not much FCC legwork to do regarding any call changes, and a few like WPSG already have brands like 'Philly 57' that easily adapt to the box (no need to change a call with 'Paramount' in it already).

Just like FOX5 in San Diego. Their call letters are still KSWB (San Diego’s WB)

FTVLive is reporting that the new and existing independent stations (minus Tampa and Seattle) will be going news-heavy (similar to KCAL) this fall. He also reports that CBS is ending the hybrid local-national NOW newscast in August.

Interesting. Does this mean there will be new operations stayed up (WUPA) or CBS News streaming will be aired or something?

This explains the job postings for Detroit.

Makes sense in the Bay Area, especially if KRON dumps most of the primetime news block for CW network programming. Not sure how the numbers have been doing as of late, but the 9:00pm hour was usually faring pretty well. Back when KRON first scrapped 9:00pm news for MyNetworkTV in 2006 (a huge mistake) KGO was pretty fast to pick it up over on KOFY.

There will be a callsign change in Pittsburgh & San Francisco come September 1st.

KPYX is obvious...WPKD sounds like "Pittsburgh KDKA". A little disappointed that they didn't go back to KBHK, but with these stations basically becoming 'plus' appendages of the main station, I really have no problems with these changes.

Also just reminds us that boats also hold FCC calls...thank you for whatever service you did, Sliver Lark and Sealand Archiver. 🫡

Huh... interesting change in Pittsburgh but not really a surprise for the San Francisco one.

I know I commented somewhere that some of these stations might change call letters.

I imagine they went with WPKD because WDKA was already taken.

Or maybe the P stands for Paramount and any future call changes for the other stations will follow this pattern.

Or maybe someone there is a Philip K. Dick fan. 😏

I figured the P was for Pittsburgh.

That could be it, too. 😁

In my defense, I'll note that I was distracted by "WPKD" and "KPYX" having P's in the same position. Yeah, that's it.... 🤓 😉

I am currently watching WUPA, and according to some promos, they seem to be rebranding as Atlanta 69.

Here's a promo for reference.

Embracing that high channel number like nobody's business. This is the way!

Back in the day, KDKA's viewing area was referred to as "KD Country".   It probably has some casual mentions now and then, but it's likely been shelved by all of the CBS mandates over the years...
