2023 MLB Season

With pitchers and catchers reporting this week and spring training about to get underway, this is the place to talk about broadcast-related aspects of the season.

Melanie Newman and Katie Nolan aren’t coming back to Apple Friday Night Baseball this season. They’ll use the more traditional two-person booth with Wayne Randazzo and Dontrelle Willis being one of the teams. They’re still deciding on the second broadcast team.

ESPN's version of the pitch clock; a little more naturally integrated into the box and it slides in and out (though since it's the first game they've done it's taken the producer a bit to remember 'oh yeah, pitch clock graphic, shoot!' and slide it in).

Just a quick update for in-season that the pitch clock is now within the pitch count/pitch type box more naturally on this one (and also generated in Helvetica).

Brendan Burke is the new play-by-play voice of Peacock’s MLB Sunday Leadoff.

Love Brendan doing Isles or TNT NHL broadcasts. We'll see how well he does on MLB broadcasts, as he's also the heir apparent for John Sterling.

I thought Bennetti was a freelancer, kind of like how Kenny Albert is on multiple networks.

The surrounding animations around the standard MLBN graphics set for the Padres sure seem pretty easy to adapt for any other team.

Guessing MLB made a quick and dirty set to have ready and perhaps something a bit more bespoke would be rolled out next season. Maybe with a full-on MLBN revamp that’s needed, IMO.

Yeah, MLB clearly had well-founded contingency plans for this scenario, and it’s impressive that they were able to put something that polished on the air in such a short time. Honestly, even if the Padres find a permanent OTA/cable partner, I could see MLB continuing to produce the games.

Indeed they did.
