WHIZ is adding Fox

Three months after Marquee acquired the station, Zanesville, Ohio's WHIZ is adding Fox on its subchannel 18.2 on November 14.

Apparently, the folks at WHIZ forgot that FOX was split up from 20th Century (Fox) Studios (0:28 in the video). And the new station's logo is what happens when you combine the Fox O&O boxkite logos (specifically WNYW/WTTG/WAGA), The 2013 Tribune/Fox boxkite logos, and the Fox News Channel logo all into one.

Not their problem. It's a different market.

But Sinclair apparently had an official status with WTTE (and later WSYX 6.3) as the "de facto" Fox affiliate for the market.  YouTube TV even carried them.

It's only Muskingum County, so it shouldn't be too big a hit to FOX 28's ratings...

"De facto" doesn't matter. It's not part of the official Columbus market.

Realistically, WTTE (and WSYX) were the only stations capable of serving Zanesville as a FOX affiliate in the absence of a local one.  Given their unofficial status, they still showed up in the ratings since they were the only viable option.

Now that WHIZ has the rights to FOX in Zanesville, expect "FOX 28" to go away on the pay TV side in Muskingum County and any residual viewership will be via antenna.  Even east of Zanesville is still part of the Columbus DMA and Sinclair still has the rights there.

I wonder why the old regime didn't do this. It seems like it would have brought more money in their pockets.

It might eat into their viewership for Licking County. Only 55 miles separates Columbus and Zanesville, and Newark is right in the middle. NBC/Fox is the right choice, though, because of Big Ten football. Probably not enough bandwidth for CBS, which has the last piece of the new contract. Fire up an LPTV and get CBS and ABC in there as well, just like Lima and Parkersburg.

Licking has both WHIZ and WCMH. I think Muskingum does as well. Given WTTE's long-time incumbency, I bet they stay on cable as well, though Time-Warner won't be too happy about that.

I believe Spectrum does have both in Muskingum, I don't know if WHIZ blacks out the duplicate content on WCMH though.

For all intents and purposes, WTTE itself can likely remain, because it is no longer affiliated with FOX 28, because of the end-around Sinclair pulled to put "FOX 28" on WSYX 6.3, and directly under Sinclair's control instead of longtime shell partner Cunningham, who now runs WTTE themselves as a repository of sub channels with little involvement of Sinclair.

FOX is pretty quick about pulling duplicate affiliations in many other markets, especially when a local affiliate signs on for the first time.  This means that viewers in Muskingum County will get the new WHIZ affiliate, while all the other surrounding counties in the Columbus DMA will still get WSYX 6.3...aka "FOX 28"

WHIZ (NBC) has a lot of cable coverage in the surrounding counties, but the new FOX arrangement likely won't transfer, unless they start local news casts and/or black out the FOX content outside of Muskingum County.

Muskingum County will still get WSYX 6.1 "ABC 6", which means they'll still have the same newscasts they got on Fox 28,  since Sinclair uses the same news department to make news for both stations.

I think the FCC has rules about this. What happens in Lima and Parkersburg?

These days, Lima has in-market affiliates for all four major networks, but a brief search of Lima's Charter Spectrum TV listings suggests that they retain CBS from Columbus, OH and ABC from Toledo, OH. https://www.tvtv.us/oh/lima/luUSA-OH34468-X

Parkersburg has NBC, CBS, and FOX; Optimum imports ABC from Columbus, OH and Charleston, WV in addition to importing NBC from Charleston, WV. https://tvtv.us/wv/parkersburg/luUSA-WV47500-X

Zanesville is the ultimate "infill" market.  By all rights, they should be part of the Columbus market, but WHIZ has been there forever, and it's kind of a legacy thing.  Parkersburg, and to a lesser extent Lima, are also infill markets, as is Lafayette IN.

Infill markets are intriguing, in that they typically have a single news operation, and with the advent of subchannels and co-owned LPTVs, you get basically the same news on all channels.  Harrisonburg VA is another case in point.  You would think that Harrisonburg and Charlottesville would be a single market, but except for one year back in the 1980s, they've always been separate.

Had Akron & Canton succeeded in getting other network affiliates on the air in the 50s and 60s, they could have been a stand-alone market as well.  They were slated to get a VHF frequency on Channel 11, but that was held up in the freeze, and later was re-assigned to Pittsburgh and became WIIC (WPXI).  That could have been WAKR, but they opted for UHF and soldiered on as an second ABC affiliate for the market, at WEWS's dismay, but allowed them to take some levity in their schedule while WAKR generally cleared everything.

Ironically, the only part of WHIZ's original ownership is the 102.5 frequency, which originally served Zanesville as WHIZ-FM, but was moved to the exurbs of Columbus to become part of that market.   It served as an automated country format, the new home of WWCD (after getting displaced from 101.1) and is now a hispanic station.

The current WHIZ-FM was sold to Marquee along with the other stations (AM & TV) as well.

Was there ever any thought given to a combined Akron-Canton-Youngstown market?  That could have been viable.
