CBS O&Os Adopting "First Alert Weather" Branding

KYW now has Next Weather.

It seems to me that CBS O&Os are finally taking weather seriously with either a unique weather brand (Next Weather) or an overly used brand (First Alert Weather) but at least they're not just going by Weather anymore with sounds very boring.

Does that average viewer care? I always wonder...

I’d honestly rather they go by “Weather.” It’s simple, unpretentious, and it’s what everyone calls it regardless of how much money stations spend on a weather brand. Names like “First Alert” and “Next” sound awfully tacky, and it’s the exact opposite of the forward-thinking approach that CBS is supposedly going for at its stations. People check the weather, they don’t check the “First Alert Forecast™.”

Even in a Gray market with that branding, it eventually does blend in over time where they just have the one call-out in the sponsor tag, and otherwise it's scripted 'in weather tonight...'. I'm glad it's there, but that the branding overall isn't that absurd. I think this will eventually be the case with the CBS intro of the Next and First Alert trademarks.

They eventually will say that. I'll check the AccuWeather Forecast from Channel 7 (WABC) or my First Alert Weather Forecast from WBRC FOX 6. Eventually, it will graze into your mentality.

I'm already used to saying 7 Weather Forecast for WSVN or my First Alert Forecast from NBC 6.

All I have to say is that you are definitely in the minority.

You're talking about viewers who will call these stations by old, no-longer used brands (I used to have a co-worker that still called KSAT 12's newscasts "NewsWatch" in the 2010s), their network, or their cable channels. The average viewer does not admire station branding to the extent you or this community in general does.

Yeah, I know. I know I'm not an average viewer. But then again, who else is? Pretty much everybody else here. Haha.

I know average viewers don't care.

In the Tallahassee market WTXL used to be "First Alert" and WCTV used to be "Pinpoint Weather". WTXL dropped "First Alert" because WCTV (owned by Gray) wanted to use it. Now WTXL is "First To Know Weather" and WCTV now uses "First Alert".

And the last of the holdouts, KCBS/KCAL, getting ready to debut Next Weather.

This branding actually makes no sense. The “next” weather branding is about what’s coming next and preparing viewers. Traffic reports are quite literally about what’s happening now, AND what has already happened to cause the current traffic backups.

Hot take- In the era of Google Maps and Waze, having traffic reports in newscasts at all makes no sense. As for the what already happened part, that's just news.

We have a battle in St. Louis headed to the courtroom....

Gray is suing Tegna for using the phrase "Weather First Alert"  on KSDK while KMOV has been using "First Alert Weather"

The only weather branding that held over many decades to TODAY is at WPVI-TV (ABC) Philadelphia when they contracted with AccuWeather in the 1970s. They marketed AccuWeather as only on Action News mercilessly LOL and people in Philadelphia WILL say to this day "AccuWeather says ..." Also, the predominate all-news radio station in Philadelphia, KYW, used AccuWeather as well - so the two news outlets with the highest ratings stuck with that branding FOR DECADES and it worked. But this is a anomaly in local news - 6Action News is as Philadelphia as the sports teams. Starting fresh today - no-one cares about First, Next, Doppler, etc. Pour the money into social ads, streaming, etc.
