Another causality: Nick Cannon’s talk show has been cancelled after only one season. Last new episodes airing in May.

Not surprised. Cannon had a great upbeat attitude, and his show had a more famous guest roster than his OG show "Wendy Williams". But his show was more of the same: celebrity guests, games, and pop culture.

I wonder since Daphne Oz was part of the Good Dish, if it left a bad taste in some of the programmer's mouths, particularly in Pennsylvania where her father's running for Congress,, and thought that wouldn't be enough regarding the "equal time rule".

Judge Jerry might live on in reruns on Nosey, where all the other shows similar to it are on.

I think Nick Cannon premiered rather too late in syndication in many markets. WUPW didn't premiere it until after Wendy was sidelined and wouldn't be back.

The Real seemed like it was going to end eventually someday, probably due to its ratings, being average and not totally improving over time.

This one actually sucks because The Real was a more relatable, less political version of The View, and a lot less generic than The Talk. It was looking bad for 'The Real' especially in New York where WNYW kept pushing it out of its 11 AM time slot. I could however see this show continuing as a topical YouTube series.

Currently it seems talk shows are either a hit or miss with no clear success formula. The market is especially saturated because the soap opera genre is near total death which would offer (more expensive) programming alternatives.

I think what the talk show circuit is lacks is either more human intrest (like Steve Harvey was) or more hard conversation--less PC shows (like Donahue, Montel, Sally Jessie) to balance out the pop-culture stuff. Tamron Hall seems to be filling that Oprah void with in-depth conversation about social issues, which IMO has helped her success.

Wow. I enjoyed watching these two and both were entertaining in their own ways. It really feels like the next syndicated talk season will be unrecognizable -- if not even more than it is now.

With The Real leaving syndication, it's another hour that FOX/MNTV stations have to fill. With what? These syndicators are going to need to find new hosts (and shows) fairly quickly.

The problem is the only thing that's actually working in the talk show field, clear advertorial junk like The Balancing Act or The Daily Flash, is crap viewers will not go near because it screams advertorial, and ends up with awful time slots, and shows that move into segments with it have to step around a minefield. And there are still new court shows and formats being thrown in syndication, even as Judy in repeats, Judge Mathis and The People's Court are the ones that stick around.

There's also the fact that even as Kelly is doing well, it also faces obnoxious pre-emptions for press conferences and local breaking news, which seem to be increasing as stations realize that they can just say 'uh, check YouTube or Twitter, record Bravo at 3am, or just pay $5 for Peacock', something they can't do for Ellen. Some stations want the 'news' cake, and will take a bite of it, even if talk show pre-emptions are the result.

Also not helping; most of the stations where The Real ends up are the low-totem priority in a duopoly, so there was little promotion in these last seasons even as it was still going strong, and it got bumped to 4am through no fault of its own in many markets because Access Daily still has to be a thing, along with these lower-tier court shows. You don't promote shows on a MyNet affiliate or like Sinclair, bump it to a DT2 or DT3 position and then just collect the retransmission consent for a Dabl/TBD TV do-nothing schedule on the main channel, this is what's going to happen.

What also didn't help Nick was the controversy he was facing in 2020.  I'm sure there are still people who refused to watch his talk show because of that.

Agreed! News coverage interruptions are getting more frequent especially during soaps!

Infomercials and newscasts lol. Zero originality here.

Maybe they could retool with Judge Jerry...Seinfeld!!!  That would do better!

That's likely to be an NBC programme, not syndicated.

I know Judge Judy is in reruns but do you think the networks (especially CBS) would ask IDMBtv to air Judy Justice on their stations. Judge Judy is still pulling in great ratings in many cities even though the show has ended.

I hope so. Judge Judy feels like appointment viewing moreso than something I'd actually go on a streaming platform other than youtube to watch.

Probably not, IIRC Judy and CBS didn't part on good terms.  That's why CBS decided to "screw it" and just cash in on decades of reruns, figuring the casual viewer wouldn't notice anyway.

Do you think FOX could make a deal with Judy? Judge Judy does air on many FOX O&Os including WTTG Fox 5, WTXF Fox 29, and WTVT Fox 13.

Also, The Doctors, just to keep Dr. Phil and his son happy. A Fallout situation could occur, and there's Dr. Ordon, still hosting it in the void of the metaverse about how to increase your brainpower with green smoothies so you repel the zombies from eating you.

Speaking of these old Judge Judy reruns, Young Sheldon has never been cleared in Yakima, KIMA is running 4-year-old Judge Judy reruns instead...they could have tweaked the schedule last fall...i.e.

4:00 Judge Judy rerun

4:30 Inside Edition

5-6:30 news/CBS News

6:30 Young Sheldon

7:00 Big Bang Theory

7:30 The Simpsons

But they didn't. The "Big Bang Hour" could have been promoted like crazy. The reruns are popular at least with my family members.

https://www.nexttv.com/features/pieces-falling-into-place-for-2022-23-tv-season

One big scoop buried in this piece:

Coming back for season three is CBS Media Ventures’s Drew Barrymore, averaging a 0.6 in households in its sophomore season.

Next year, the show will be split into two half-hours, which stations can run back to back or separately. CBS-owned stations will pair Drew with local news in top markets and air the second half-hour on its duopoly stations, sources said.

Oh, like maybe at 9:30am, on the O&O's? 😉
