New PRM. But this station is staying on VHF.

Fredericksburg, TX's KCWX wants to vacate RF 5 for RF 8.

For one thing, getting off the VHF-low is an improvement. But I doubt anyone from Austin or San Antonio would pick up the Channel 8 signal without getting a good antenna.

Well the KCWX PRM is back on again.

I think the reason they withdrew was that they the forgot to attach the actual "petition for rulemaking" PDF. They only posted the engineering part.

So on page 1-2 of the petition PDF, it stated this:

Quote

Corridor is requesting this change to high-band VHF Channel 8 as the best possible alternative to resolve the reception issues faced by the Fredericksburg viewers. However, should a UHF channel become available during the pendency of this Petition, Corridor alternatively requests placement on such channel.

So if a UHF allotment is not available now, why expect it be available later.......

New petition today. This time its a PBS outlet.

New Orleans' WYES wants to vacate VHF 11 for UHF 28.

They're the only major station on the VHF allotment so this PRM makes tons of sense.

They must have been able to make do since the DTV transition since both WLOX and WVUE didn't waste any time switching back to their UHF allotments due to major problems on their VHF channels they switched back to in digital.

WLOX has since repacked from 39 to 32, and we saw that WVUE wanted to upp their power earlier on 29.

New M&A. It appears TCT is buying more sticks.

Through Faith Broadcasting Network, they're acquiring KWKB (Iowa City, IA) & KPNZ (Odgen, UT) from HC2 for $4M.

I know here in the Mobile-Pensacola area, TCT recently purchased WFBD licensed to Destin (serving the eastern fringe), and recently put a feed on WPAN's .2 channel which is owned by another party.

In the past, WFBD leased their airtime to a company (Blab TV) which now runs on WPAN's primary channel, and actually did so prior to the sign-on of WFBD.

HC2 has two other low-powered stations in the market, but they broadcast mostly useless programming, aside from Azteca America.

HC2 is shedding more of its unbuilt permits. Just like Gray, SagamoreHill is acquiring some for $260K.

SagamoreHill may as well be acting like a Gray sidecar as usual by scooping up translators for them...

No. I'm sure SagamoreHill bought these permits for themselves. LPs don't count in the main ownership limits like full powers. And there is no numerical limit on the amount of LPs (built or unbuilt) a single owner can get.

Why use a sidecar to get an LP? That doesn't make any sense.

Anywho, Gray has filed another PRM.

They want to move Weston, WV's WDTV from VHF 5 to UHF 33.

It does seem curious that SagamoreHill is getting these LPs in markets they don't own stations, but my theory is that these stations could be used for 3.0, by contracting with the other stations in the market.  This way, you don't have the "shoehorning" of the 1.0 signals when a channel goes 3.0.  Plus, given the early and experimental nature of ATSC 3.0, put them on a low power stick close to the main population center.   Usually, these signals are adequate to cover most of the population in an area.

It doesn't make much sense otherwise for them to grab the stations...and low and behold guess who owns the stations in those markets 👀

ATSC 3.0 repeaters coming in? 👀

That still doesn't mean they're buying the LP permits for them (which sounds foolish). I'm sure Gray could've easily bought these same permits (that SagamoreHill is getting) on their own accord, without playing sidecar.

Look at Lake Charles & Watertown where SagamoreHill owns an LP there. Are they're getting any assistance or influence from Gray in those markets? No.

More HC2 LP-permit shedding.

DuJuan McCoy's Circle City Broadcasting is buying five LPs in Indiana for $60K.

  • W28EY-D Fort Wayne, IN

  • W31ET-D Fort Wayne, IN

  • WEDX-LD Fort Wayne, IN

  • W29FI-D Terre Haute, IN

  • W16CZ-D Terre Haute, IN

And Marquee Broadcasting is getting two LPs in Albany, GA for $28K.

  • WDRJ-LD Albany, GA
  • WFDY-LD Albany, GA

This deal would make total sense for Marquee. Most folks in the immediate part of Albany can't receive WSWG (CBS) since its OTA signal far to the east.

Fort Wayne and Terre Haute are different markets.

Yes, but DuJuan McCoy has had some statewide ambitions for a bit now. WISH's news is airing on a subchannel of WRJK-LD Chicago to serve the Northwest Indiana area, and their newscasts are also airing on WHME in South Bend.

Quote

...the beginning of my goal to bring the quality and legacy of WISH-TV news from the capital city of Indianapolis to all television markets in the state of Indiana, and to the estimated 1.2 million Hoosiers that currently receive their local news from non-Indiana television stations, including the Gary region (Chicago DMA), and 15 counties in Southern Indiana (Cincinnati and Louisville DMAs).

This doesn't help with the "unserved Indiana audiences" problem, but he kinda needs Fort Wayne and Terre Haute if he's going to be bringing WISH-TV news to every market in the state. Lafayette, Louisville and Cincinnati are the last DMAs he needs a presence in (though WISH's signal reaches Lafayette).

Louisville looks like a tough one to crack as it does not have many LPTVs.

If not a station purchase, as WMYO-CD has always tried to program for the Indiana side of the market (including an INN newscast in the late 2000s on their old sister station WWJS-CD), I could see them push for WISH simulcasts on their schedule. WBNA is also a possibility.

Sinclair is selling its de-CBS'd station in the Rio Grande Valley: KGBT is going to Mission Broadcasting in a $2 million transaction.

Today was unusually busy:

Weigel is buying six LPTV permits from HC2 for $145,333:

K15IQ-D Portland, Oregon

WZDS-LD Evansville, Indiana

W30EM-D Orlando, Florida

W32EQ-D Birmingham, Alabama

K36LI-D Portland, Oregon

K20OO-D Sacramento, California

Little Rock's KTV Media is snagging two HC2 permits in Paragould, Arkansas (K36MT-D and K35LN-D) for $20,000.

I imagine Nexstar will reinstate the CBS affiliation on KGBT as they used their sidecar to buy it instead of them proper...

KGBT 4.1 has apparently been off the air since CBS moved the KVEO's spectrum, with that, I can see that both KGBT & KVEO return to their pre-2020 arrangements once Mission takes control.
