KNBC’s Fritz Coleman is retiring

Recommended Posts

  • CircleSeven changed the title to KNBC’s Fritz Coleman is retiring

Retiring. Don't think the station would put together a 4min video of his career (in the original link) if there were nefarious circumstances. I figured retirement was on the horizon when he reduced his schedule to just the 5pm/11pm maybe 1.5-2yrs ago when Anthony Yanez arrived from Houston. He was doing 5p, 6p and 11pm previously. If you go way back in the day, he was doing 4p, 5p, 6p and 11p when the station originally launched the 4pm news back in the 80s

An old 1980s Channel 4 News promo with Fritz for good measure as well.

I just watched the retrospective video. Why wouldn't they have one of his longtime co-workers track the piece? Having the voiceover guy do it just sounds so impersonal.

He doesn’t leave until the 26th. I’m sure they’ll have many colleagues talking with and about him that evening and the next week.

Especially Fritz’s predecessor Pat Sajak (who left KNBC to do some show called Wheel Of Fortune across the lot)!

Coleman did not replace Sajak.  Kevin O'Connell was KNBC's weatherman from 1982 (Sajak's departure) to 1985 (when O'Connell went to KCBS).

Right; Fritz joined as weekend weatherman before moving to weeknights (when News 4 LA became Channel 4 News).

And oh yeah...O’Connell did that short-lived game show GO just a few stages down.

WOF used to tape in Burbank? Thought they were always in Culver City with Jeopardy

Since 1995, yes (Wheel first taped at NBC in Burbank and later (CBS) Television City).

those are some crystal clear archive clips - good to see KNBC preserved so much - but odd to have the announcer voicing the story instead of chuck, colleen, or fred
