WSMV getting new set

WSMV-TV in Nashville is getting a brand new set designed by Z Space Creative. This has been previously mentioned on Discord, but today is their final day on the old FX Group set. They should be on their new set by late October.

Here's a few pictures of their temporary setup upstairs in the Today in Nashville studio. Weather is being done from a monitor at the Live Desk.

Tom did a Facebook Live earlier in the evening showing the production crew already ripping out parts of the old set. It looked like the weather center started getting dismantled and duratrans were being ripped out.

Definitely an improvement over the former set. But as previously mentioned, yes this is the KPHO set modified. Meredith is apparently putting this same set design in two more stations.

I've never seen a news studio with TWO weather pods on it before.

My guess is KCTV is getting one of those sets. Can't quite say who the other might be.

KOLR KAKE used to have two weather pods (that could solo produce two separate weather cut-ins independent from the news program happening in the same studio!)

Unfortunately, the old promo video they shot highlighting all the features of the weather center seems to have been scrubbed from the internet.

Now that I think about it, that setup reminds me of the WeatherPlex KAKEland used to have: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR3SKHLGwTY

WSMV has had so many sets over the past decade (remember the ski lodge?) - this is definitely the best I’ve seen from them in many years.

Now it’s time to win back the trust of their audience after all the recent behind-the-scenes drama and the way they dropped Demetria Kalodimos...

Technically the weather pod that KPHO uses is not a weather pod at WSMV. That area is known as the content center, so far it’s been used for traffic, sports, a secondary standup shot, and can also be used (and is slated to be used) as an alternate anchor desk.

WSMV now has four standup areas versus only two before. Two of those standup areas, the long arrays, will soon be coded to be split in two making two additional camera shots with a half-wall instead of the full wall for a total of 6 standup areas. There’s also the chroma wall on the opposite wall of the set but that will be used only for weather at this point.

The idea behind this set was to use every last available inch of space in that studio and they successfully did so.

That’s the idea. New management is building the station basically from the ground up again.

The "ski lodge" was the last set the Late Dan Miller worked on w/ Demetria...

Eh, I can see KPHO resemblance especially on the desk and the backlit monitors and walls not happy though home base has a silly shot of the background could use it as a live shot of the city. That be a weird angle otherwise it's pretty nice and fancy.

Yeah Dan Miller died from a heart attack while home in Augusta, GA in 2009. Tom Randles who was already working at the station as a secondary evening anchor became his successor.

Everyone disputes the Demetria thing, and I cannot say one way or another what really happened. The only thing I know for sure is that ratings slipped hard after Dan died and several unpopular previous management decisions accelerated the decline.

Demetria didn’t save the station from its fall from grace, she wasn’t the one keeping ratings up, she was still there when they were slipping into third place. It was her departure that only made things quickly worse. It was mostly the high profile incidents behind the scenes with previous management and Demetria playing up her departure as a victim in The Tennessean that led to additional people turning it off. The backlash the station received were not even from longtime viewers, a lot of people who complained read about it or saw it mentioned somewhere else and decided to jump on the hate bandwagon, claiming they had watched for years when arguably they may have only watched once in the 30 years she was there.

WSMV is thankfully recovering and quickly under a new management. The current management in place knows what to do to turn things around and they’ve been making good choices. As I’ve previously mentioned, July sweeps was very telling that no one in the market did better than the other, not even WTVF. It was only WSMV that for the first time in a long time had year over year growth and ranked second out of four stations. We’ll see what happens with the November book, but hopefully the growth continues.
