The big red 9's been doing this stuff for years. These days, they only have enough room for 5 panels, so they 'extend' it by removing the first 2. Most meteorologists worth their weight will tell you extended forecasts don't mean much outside of Day 4. But we've long been in an era where consultants preach the need to show the weekend forecast for viewers as a beacon of hope - that's how we got to 7-days in the first place. 10-days were popular at one point when they REALLY didn't have much accuracy to them - and they largely still don't today. I'm guessing WSB's solution was a mix of consultants' demand about the weekend and their weather team's insistence it wouldn't mean much most of the time. 3

With the new open and new weather graphics, a (much-needed) graphics overhaul to the remainder seemed inevitable. That being said, was this during the sports segment? They’ve been using the “slanted” version of the blue background for sports for a while.

atlnews2 530
WSB has introduced slightly new L3's - also a new bug in the right had corner - the time and temp layout reminds me of the scripps new look https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/cobb-county/suntrust-park-signs-removed-braves-stadium/ENWGR4CLINF7VE4PQILARRGXGM/

I like them. Though, given the weather graphics, I was expecting something more like a full overhaul than this. But I think it took the look they’ve had for a while and cleaned it up. They definitely don’t look as “busy” as they did before.

Malek Masoud 15
Is anyone still hoping that WSB-TV will revive that closing graphic that involves NewsChopper 2 flying around Atlanta, GA just like in the old days? 4
TresGriffin 117
So, I'm not sure if this is for special COVID-19 coverage, but it looks like they finally dropped the rest of their new graphics. These certainly closely resemble the weather graphics launchd some months ago. Another part of me wonders if this is just for the 11:00 newscast, since it looks like they've rebranded it as WSB TONIGHT in lieu of the long running "Nightbeat": Edited April 10, 2020 by TresGriffin
who?cares 235
It doesn't appear the morning show is using them. Although a billboard had the new look.

I know because WFTV and WSOC are doing the same concept (coronavirus impact on their respective markets), but with their own visual spin. These 11:00 graphics are great, compared to what was there before. I am hoping that this will result in a graphics overhaul for the station, as I think the '12 light flares have ran their course. It is simple enough and is less intrusive as their previous graphics. Hopefully this is the test run for a refresh! TheRyan 556
I see those gfx working on WSOC but it needs some work. And btw, why are they branding as WSOC instead of using the well-established '9' logo & branding?

I don't necessarily "Hate" using the call letters, but 9 is so much better, IMO

If they still call themselves Channel 9, its because they still do. They're just using the WSOC brand only for the 11:00 p.m. news, nothing more. Because even the station would hate to use their call sign all throughout the day. Channel 9 is just much easier to say and they know that.
qunewsguy 366
I wonder if this is a group-wide effort to play with the 11pm format and see if people stick around? WFTV is using the same branding and an alternate version of the graphics on WSOC.
