Uh, quick question? LIM4.1 isn't designed to run on VizRT, but the Gray ticker, which only runs on VizRT, is present. What system is WFIE/KGMB using?

WVUE just posted a breaking news story and used an updated Gray Graphics as the image on their website. It's an AP story, so perhaps it was added by another Gray location (such as WAFB), but is that indicative of a graphics package change for 4pm?

ETA: They’re in breaking coverage right now for Sean Payton leaving and using the Raycom graphics.

Yeah that logo was from the Raycom years...questionable graphics at times for sure..but a flat version of the 80's logo would really be a nice touch for 70 yrs. Great station, got a ton of experience as an intern there

Seeing that new WAVE logo reminds me of other local TV stations that got on the retro logo bandwagon:

 

* KSTP-TV 5 of Minneapolis, Minnesota switched to a logo resembling their red and white 1982 logo.

    

 

* WMAR-TV 2 of Baltimore, Maryland is currently using a logo that resembles their original 1975 logo.

I like how neither of the “new” logos have the current ABC logo. I know that KSTP switched to the current ABC logo already. But dang, the Gray graphics thread is turning into a logo discussion thread. @24994JWe should have a logo discussion thread.

Fact Check time! KSTP's does use the new ABC logo- A quick scroll through the homepage of their website shows that... I counted 8 new ABC logos, 3 old logos. Since I watch their newscasts, click on any recent video and you will see the new logo used on all on-air graphics (except mic flags). And if we're bring honest, as small of a scale the ABC logo is the average/casual viewer probably doesn't notice or care about the change.

 

Also- I'll go on the argument (again...) that it's not necessarily retro. The logo goes back to the red box/parallelogram a few times from the original inception. The most recent case in 2021, Fox9 switched to the new O&O look making every station's primary color a shade of blue (4, 5, 9, and 11). KSTP simply differentiated themselves by changing their color scheme to red/white/black.

One "vintage logo" we'll never see on TV again for sure is likely the 1980's WVUE logo.

During Hurricane Katrina, the station was badly flooded by the levee failures in the area, resulting in the station having to be re-built from the inside out, literally.

 

Since then, the station has risen to become the #1 station in New Orleans, with it's own doing, and helped by the declining fortunes of WWL, mostly at the behest of their owners and CBS.

It is not uncommon for the graphic designer of a TV station's later logo to borrow from that station's past, like with KSTP or WMAR's case...these derivative works could be just an amazing coincidence, such as in KSTP's case...

Well, WFIE has finally ditched the old Raycom graphics and moved over to Gray graphics. They're still using old versions of their logo on the weather bug and time/temp bug; it would look better flat and possibly all white in a gray/black translucent background. Many of the new graphics focus solely on the 14 and ditch the NBC peacock. Apologies for the poor screengrabs.

Emmis basically gave up on the station after Katrina, and its largely why the other stations owners also gave up (hell isn't WDSU STILL in Widescreen SD?). The late Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and a large contributor to trying to revitalize NOLA after Katrina, bought the station in 2008 and ran the station for a couple years until he sold it to Raycom. It was Benson though that turned the station around giving it the hometown focus that led to its rise in the ratings.

 

Now, NOLA is beginning to thrive again despite still dealing with issues from Katrina and Gray is in a good position with WVUE, especially given the fact Belo gave up and made massive cuts at WWL before being sold to Gannett/TEGNA, WDSU just floating along as the redheaded stepchild of Hearst, and despite Nexstar attempting to turn WGNO around, it's still not where it needs to be because Tribune ran it into the ground for decades.

WDSU switched their news to HD around the same time as WGNO debuted its HD news and new graphics and set. I can't remember which station was first, but they were both around the same time.

 

Back to WVUE, does anyone know what's going on with their studio cameras, specifically the ones facing the anchors? The colors seem washed and the brightness is off. It's stark when they cut from the anchor shot to a reporter, skin tones, logos, and other elements are drastically different.

It feels like the lighting in the studio washes everything out. 

You can tell on the monitor bank when they try to show a dark image and pick up the reflection of the lights.

CBS was trying to unload WUPL to Belo with WWL, after being rebuffed by them to acquire WWL as well.  Katrina pushed that sale aside for about a year or two.  Emmis was in the midst of selling all of their stations and Katrina pushed off the sale long after the other Emmis stations had been sold.

Their Wikipedia pages haven't been updated, but it says both are in widescreen SD. WDSU switched to HD in August of 2020. I don't think WGNO is in HD yet, but feel free to correct me.
