Back to WSMV. They've made a small branding change this Labor Day.

The news brand has changed "News 4 Nashville" to "WSMV 4 News". They've also the first station to use new theme music from (founder of 615 Music) Randy Wachtler's new music firm, 11 One/Music.

Did they have a staffer voice those opens?!

Sounds like they brought some lady out in the street to be told, "read this".....

Alrighty, small M&A. Gray is getting another LP near its home base.

They're getting Athens, GA LP, W20EQ-D from Madison Avenue Ventures for $12K.

The other Athens LP Gray has is W33EU-D.

EDIT: I should also mention that Gray has completed its LP deal to get Pascagoula, MS's WGUD-LD.

It'll be interesting to see whether they'll move WGUD to WLOX's tower or not.

KVVU in Las Vegas is adding a 7pm half-hour newscast beginning today. Their afternoon news block now consists of 1-2pm, and then 3pm to 7:30pm. The new 7pm newscast bumps Extra back to midnight.

I think we all figured this was coming... KVVU added a 2 PM newscast now that Ellen is officially done with reruns. They're on the air nonstop from 1pm-7:30pm.

Think about this...

4:00-10:00am

1:00-7:30pm

10:00pm-12:00am

And that's on top of their longtime lifestyle show MORE from 10:00-11:00am and the new syndicated show Beat The Odds that's coming out of KVVU's studios.

I don't see any problem with this. There are casinos in Las Vegas that are open 24/7 and the town is known for its nightlife. Someone who works evenings, gets home well after midnight, and sleeps till early or mid-afternoon might actually want to watch the local news.

WBTV is expanding On Your Side Tonight to an hour at 7:00. https://www.wbtv.com/2022/09/08/wbtv-expands-your-side-tonight-with-jamie-boll/

It sounds like WBTV News Primetime will just be folded into it using the On Your Side Tonight name. If Jamie Boll had been the one to leave they might have used the WBTV News Primetime name instead.

What I see happening in Duluth is consolidating Morning newscasts

Almost two months later, turns out to be a correct prediction- KBJR/CBS3 morning newscasts are combined- Staff from both shows were merged, live reporting in the morning added, and KBJR is now using "F1RST ALERT" Weather branding with the old KBJR/Quincy graphics.

That said, looking at their website, the morning newscast will rebrand as "Northern News Now" at 5a and 6a. Evening newscasts appear untouched for now with the exception of weather on CBS3 using the KBJR graphics- otherwise the CBS3 show still has their own branding.

WMBP-LD is on the air and is currently broadcasting a relay of WALA's main FOX feed on 31.3 In HD and rebroadcasting Telemundo Atlanta on 31.4 in widescreen SD.  They still have to finalize the PSIP but it looks like it's going to be 31.1 and 31.2.

They've also filed with the FCC and completed their change of COL from Eastabuchie, MS to Mobile, AL.

Good they got that lit up. Let's see what they're going to do with WGUD-LD to the west. That LP will become WTBL-LD.

Anyway, New M&A. Gray is snagging some LPs in Arkansas.

They're getting these three from Larry Morton's KTV Media for $535K.

  • KJNM-LD Fayetteville
  • KJBW-LD Paragould
  • KJTB-LD Paragould (formerly K36MT-D)

The latter two are in KAIT 8's territory.

Fayetteville is an odd one, since there are no Gray stations in NW Arkansas, and the prospects aren't great of acquiring one - the most likely scenario I can see is that Tegna and Standard collapse, then acquires Hearst, leaving Gray with the leftovers.

Gray recently bought that Macon LP (not sure if they launched Telemundo yet). But if they hold on to that LP, I wouldn't be shocked if it would launch Telemundo there (if it isn't already launched).

Anywho, remember back in January, Gray bought a slew of LPs (24) from Jeff Winemiller's Lowcountry Media?

Well tonight, Gray is snagging Nine more from him for $1.8M.

Spoiler
  • K19NE-D - Gateway, CO
  • W36EO-D - La Grange, GA
  • K21PD-D - Columbia, MO
  • K33MN-D - Jefferson City, MO
  • W30EZ-D - Purvis, MS
  • WYBM-LD - Westmoreland, NH
  • W28FG-D - Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH
  • K21PE-D - Tyler, TX
  • K17OY-D -  Centerville, WA

I just saw that K21PE is coming from KLTV (Gray's existing full-power station)'s tower.  Seems convenient enough.

Here's the rebrand of KBJR to "Northern News Now"- Shockingly managed to rebrand a whole station and not upgrade to the Gray graphics package. Instead, they rehashed the KBJR Quincy package. Take note behind the weather desk you can see they're working on the Gray wx graphics at least.

That makes two of us... Add in the Gray "honeycomb" graphics package and they'll really have something!

I look forward to the facebook comments from the Karens on Monday.

As smaller stations, I could see all, or almost all, the ex-Quincy stations getting the "honeycomb" package, which seems to be the smaller market package.

They're snagging another one......

K14NR-D from C. Dowen Johnson for $230K.

Gray already operates K31PR which is their primary repeater for KLTV. It'll be interested what they'll do with these two new LPs.
