New Fox Station for Jonesboro

http://arkansastvnewswatch.blogspot.com/2015/06/new-fox-station-for-jonesboro.html

And you might need a good outdoor antenna to pick it up, since its transmitter is near Walnut Ridge.

Now, when will Jonesboro get a CBS affiliate? Or will WREG fight it?

It looks like Waypoint Media is doing the exact same thing in Jonesboro that they are also doing in Hattiesburg, MS. Waypoint acquired a low power station there and beamed in a FOX affiliate (and eventually a CW .2) from their facility in Meridian. Waypoint owns both WGBC and WMDN in Meridian, having acquired WMDN from Frank Spain via a failed station waiver.

I'm surprised KAIT didn't go after CBS as a .2 prospect. This way, they would still have WMC to import into the market as an NBC. Antitrust issues perhaps?

KAIT just recently added NBC to 8.2 and just simulcast WMC's newscasts.

Not sure how antitrust work with networks on subchannels but I guess Raycom figured it was easier to just make 8.2 a satellite of WMC instead of tackling a new network.

Had KAIT added CBS instead of NBC to it's subchannel, Raycom would have had a de facto monopoly over Jonesboro after the importation of WMC's signal, making Raycom the supplier of all 3 major networks. Since Memphis is a separate market and KAIT is only a single station, it's all legal under the current guidelines. Given Jonesboro's location, Memphis is their only option.

If Lima, Ohio can have one company control all of the affiliations through subchannels and low-powered stations, it's possible because there's only 1 full powered license involved in said DMA.

I fully expect KPLC to shoehorn another network or two onto their frequency given Raycom's desire to sub-channel their incomplete markets and to make up market share from losing Lafayette to Nexstar when they sign their own NBC affiliate there..

Now if this wasn't broadcasting, this may pose an antitrust issue. That's the irony of the state of the FCC with digital television.

I wonder if that's where Fred Shropshire is headed?

That's the rumor. I kinda figured that's where Fred was going because, all the other stations have pretty solid teams with the exception of WJZY and I highly doubt he would be heading there.

DMA #33 Latest News

  • WOAI and KABB have found their new morning traffic reporter and they did not have to look far. "San Antonio Living" contributor Claudia Garofalo (the wife of WOAI morning anchor Michael Garofalo) has been named the new traffic reporter. I didn't know this until last night. I saw her on-air last week but just thought they were trying out different people. She's not very good IMO. She seems nervous and doesn't even look at the map. Usually she is looking straight at the camera. I guess she'll get better with time.

[*]KENS 5 GM Bob McGann, who has been the GM there since Belo recruited him to take over upon their acquisition in 1998, is retiring at the end of the year. While I have to say congratulations I think fresh blood is needed at KENS. They have not done well under his leadership and they lost their longtime dominant #1 position to KSAT in the mid 2000's so let's hope Tegna will bring in someone competent with fresh ideas to KENS. But I won't hold my breath...

Also for our friends in San Diego I read that Kristen Keogh will be joining KGTV News 10 next week. Where she will be a weathercaster and reporter. I would presume she is replacing Ashlee DeMartino who is going to KPHO as noted in this thread earlier. Keogh had been the PIO with the Arizona AG but I guess she hated PR life and is going back to TV after a brief hiatus. Before that she was with KSAZ also as a weathercaster and anchor/reporter.

A joint venture fight means that a Spanish-language network gets a court-appointed receiver. A Florida court relieved Omar Romay of his duties as CEO of the joint venture América CV, appointing a receiver to run the América TeVe unit, according to Media Moves.

Pedro Roig, former attorney and director of Radio/TV Martí, will replace Romay as the court sifts through a lawsuit filed by Caribevisión, one half of the JV. The suit accuses Romay of mishandling funds, giving the JV unauthorized, undocumented loans of $5 million, excluding shareholders from meetings and appointing his wife, son and two daughters to the board of directors.

The court has said Romay can be in charge of programming and production but not operations or finances of the joint venture, which owns four Puerto Rico television transmitters with spectrum potentially worth $130m. Romay, saddled by debt, has said that he fully intends on cashing out at the spectrum auction; the plaintiff contends that Romay ran the JV into the ground to spur losses in the millions of dollars.

A trial is set for October; Roig may step down as receiver if the parties settle out of court.

The four television stations are WJPX (21, V24) in San Juan, WIRS (41, V42) in Yauco, WKPV (19, V20) in Ponce and WJWN (39, V38) in San Sebastián. They carry MundoFox and América TeVe.

I remember watching Pimentel's commentaries (also called "Just A Minute") on WTVR back in the early 2000's. Hope this works.

KSAT has hired a new reporter, Concetta Callahan who comes from KOLD-KMSB in Tucson. I just saw her doing the "Morning Headlines" segment a few minutes ago. Also I believe she anchored the morning news this weekend. I'm not sure what her role is just quite yet.

You've read this here first before MySA or any industry website. :)

WBRZ reporter Brett Buffington was arrested May 28 and booked with interfering with a police investigation and for intimidating an officer.

He allegedly ignored officers' requests to infringe too much on a burglary scene so he wouldn't disturb police dogs, according to the police report. He refused and began taking photos with a flash. Buffington was then detained in a police car for a while and then told he was free to go.

According to the police report, Buffington told a cop "Hope you enjoy the rest of your career." The cop took that to mean that Buffington would have him fired and Buffington was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

No word if Buffington has bonded out.

If this is true, it's a VERY bone-headed move on Buffington's part.

Two down, one to go. I guess Trayce will likely be the next victim with a dagger in her back before the year is out. I'm half joking, but I wouldn't be the least surprised if that happened.

WVIT's Todd Piro seems to have been filling in for Betty Nguyen on Early Today/First Look over the past few months. Wondering if they are auditioning him for something else (maybe the west coast retaking of Early Today?)

Looking for another source, but VARTV's Twitter account reports that WTKR will be producing weeknight newscasts on WGNT (which they did 20 years ago with little success and currently do on weekends); thus competing with WAVY News 10 at 10 on FOX 43.
