WTAJ used the "WTAJ Drone" to showcase the aftermath from a traffic accident. The video wasn't that good. You can hardly make out anything.

Don't they know using a drone for commercial purposes is illegal. Look at what happened to an employee at WFSB http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/a-journalist-almost-lost-his-job-for-droning-a-deadly-car-crash

Frankly the very idea of television stations having drones under their own power is off-putting to me. Also, especially given the opinion on drones in general as of late, how do you think your viewers would respond to knowing that one of their local television stations has a drone?

Well, it's certainly not legal right now, not until 2015.

Julie Tremmel, the WJAR reporter who became infamous after doing a news story about what you should do during a bear attack and doing a standup on both her hands, is filing a grievance against the station over what she believes is a wrongful termination.

There is a petition to bring her back to the station. Their goal is a 1000 signatures; they currently have 146.

I don't know what to say about this. People who were involved in television during the golden age were real characters. On a nostalgia site, former station employees tell the story about how one local sportscaster would signal one of his groupies he was coming over after the 11 pm news by clicking his pen on TV during the sportscast. One evening, the anchorman grabbed the pen from him before he could signal his date over the air.

The local weathercaster was known for occasionally bringing bimbos on the air to do the weather with him. Those days were fun and television was interesting to watch. It was a lot like radio used to be.

It's now corporate and that's why broadcasting is about as interesting as walking into a Sears store.

Walking on her hands sounds goofy, but at least she showed some personality.

This one's kind of amusing too:

KOMU's ND Stacey Woelfel was named the first director of the new Jonathan Murray Documentary Journalism Center at the MU School of Journalism, and, as a result, is stepping down from KOMU on Sept. 1.

KTVA's new set has debuted, designed by Devlin Design Group.

It's rather similar to the KSAZ 2013 set from them, especially the shape of the desk and the layout of the weather center.

KTVA debuted their new set back in December along with their new building. Why did TVSpy wait 'til NOW to post that?

Meanwhile in the Lower 48, KTVI-Fox 2 in St. Louis debuted their news boat called AquaFOX. Yes, a NEWS BOAT. I'm not kidding.

Didn't KTLA do this years ago? One of the clips in a compilation I made of KTLA news opens infers they did (the clip I'm taking about is at 1:39).

Former KSAT ND Jim Boyle, who ran the newsroom for 29 years, passed away yesterday following a 5-month battle with cancer that forced him to resign. He was 66.

All my condolences go out to his family. RIP Jim, you'll truly be missed, especially by your extended family over at KSAT.

After less than 6 months at WSET, former WALA news director Bob Cashen is out.

It's too late for him to go back to WALA....as they have JUST hired WCBD news director Scott Flannigan.

http://www.rickgevers.com/news-director-updates/

Now, WSET says he's still employed by the station.

Remember former KCAL 9 promotional director Marshall Hites, the one responsible for several 615 Music theme songs? Tribune Broadcasting president Larry Wert, appointed Mr. Hites as the new Senior VP of marketing and creative services. He will oversee all the creative service departments for all 42 of the Tribune stations, and will stay involved in the marketing ops at KTLA 5, where he's been at since 2011.

This is nothing but good news. Some stations probably need it. I wish Hites can appoint a new CSD for WPIX. They really need someone to bring some liveliness to their brand. Like bring back its old theme song. What I don't want to see is if Tribune thinking about "standardizing" like these other groups. Please don't let that be the case.

An unfortunate acronym, but the National Association of Black-Owned Broadcasters is proposing a JSA/SSA compromise under which most agreements would be unwound and those agreements that serve the public interest would be reviewed annually by the FCC, with a guarantee that a station would be transferred to minority ownership.

"Also according to the filing, NABOB had previously opposed JSAs and SSAs altogether, on grounds that they “appeared to be mere gimmicks for group licensees to avoid the intent of the local ownership rules.”

Nonetheless, Winston said that two of the three full-power TV stations currently licensed to African Americans in the U.S. are being operated under JSA and SSA agreements."

Howard Stirk Holdings looks like a solid investment right about now.

It's sad that it has strong ties to the Heathens Of Hunt Valley.

It would be nice to see more minority ownership, but having just that one wouldn't be enough. And even if Anderson, Mumblow or any other shell company are willing to sell their "license papers" to that Uncle Tom, it would probably wouldn't stop Wheeler for following through on his "so-called" plan to make JSA's attributible (that's if he's willing, and he has the votes to do so).

Broadcasters better have their lobbyists to "lobby like crazy" all this month, if there's any chance to save their JSAs.

Some news & notes out of Mobile/Pensacola.....

WEAR anchor Mollye Barrows is leaving the station...

http://flnewscenter.com/?p=8013

During coverage of Mardi Gras, the WKRG anchor team did a live FaceTime interview with longtime sports director, Randy Patrick. He's been off the air due to surgery and health issues, and is hoping to return sometime in March or April.

With it being Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras), Mobile stations pulled out all of the stops to provide coverage of the local parades. WKRG went with coverage from 9am-5pm; WPMI did 4 hours of live coverage from 10am-2pm, and WALA did two hours of live coverage from 12noon-2pm. Since WEAR is a Pensacola station, they did not pre-empt regular programming. Outside of New Orleans, Mobile is the only major market that pulls out all of the stops for today.
