Here's why according to today's Virginian-Pilot...

Looks like this thing may prove to be bigger than just a simple tax issue for Bickford.

KMBC has hired Kisha Henry away from KOKH in Oklahoma City as a reporter/anchor.

KMBC is going so young and ridding of anybody that's old or has been there for years that it's ridiculous. Slowly pushing the knife into themselves further it seems.

Kisha starts at KMBC in March as an anchor/reporter. I don't know if this person is picking up an anchor shift yet.

Kisha is what the 4th person to leave KOKH in less then a year. Liz Dueweke left in April to anchor the morning news on the ABC station in Seattle, Mark Taylor left not long after to anchor the news at some station (I forget which) in Denver, Jamie Cerreta left in August to anchor at 3TV in Phoenix now Kisha is leaving in March to join KMBC. Seems like the people at KOKH are dropping like flies.

Don't forget Michelle Apon who left there to join KSHB as one their meteorologists.

either the following people who are mentioned have problems with management or their contracts are due for renewing as a condition.

KOKH has always had high turnover. First of all it's Sinclair, they don't pay much as it is especially when you compare them with the other three stations there. Secondly they are a distant last place in OKC. Basically everyone just goes there to get their two years experience and then move on.

News out of the world of public broadcasting:

The future of PBS member KMBH in the Rio Grande Valley market is cloudy as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brownsville wants out. Apparently the station can be converted into a commercial license?

It has always been a commercial station, but it has been used for non-commerical purposes. The only noncommercial station in the market is KLUJ.

WPMI's longest tenured personality, morning anchor Pat Greenwood is leaving the station to assume a new role in the University of South Alabama's athletic department....

http://blog.al.com/live/2014/01/pat_greenwood_leaving_wpmi_to.html#incart_river_default

He'll be with the station until the end of July.

Aside from anchoring the morning news, he has also hosted "The Joey Jones Show" featuring USA's football coach Joey Jones which airs in the fall on sister station WJTC. He has also been a sideline reporter for that station's high school football telecasts.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal is confirming what NewsBlues reported yesterday, that WMC VP/GM Lee Meredith is leaving the station and being reassigned to sister station WAFB in Baton Rouge, replacing the outgoing Sandy Breland who is heading to WVUE. Meredith's successor at WMC has not yet been named.

It will be interesting to see who replaces Meredith, as his tenure at WMC has been during a period of near continuous ratings declines along with a worsening of WMC's news product through reliance on increased sensationalism.

Links not provided since both would be behind paywalls.

Surprised no one else has mentioned this but looks like KSDK is in hot water over this (story from KMOV).

And KSAT has added meteorologist Katie Vossler, previously of KETK, to their weather team. She debuted onair during the 4pm news but Steve Browne was back at 5. She will be only the second female meteorologist currently working in the market. I think she does just the 4pm news but they didn't exactly say what her role would be. Maybe she's relieving Steve Browne so he can focus on the 5, 6 and 10pm news. His contract runs out later in the year and he has said he'd like to scale back his role at that time. Surprised they did not hire Kelly Slifka for this role, since he had filling in on weekend mornings during the holidays, and he was professional. Vossler's pretty good though.

That whole thing is a mess and basically it seems like it was the result of a breakdown in communication between the school and the station. This station also did the same thing in other schools around the St. Louis area but they must've been able to verify that he was a reporter. The reason the one in Kirkwood went into lockdown was because they weren't able to verify that he was a reporter for KSDK for whatever reason.

WLBT announced via Facebook that reporter/anchor Bert Case is retiring effective Jan. 31.

Bert's been at WLBT since 1974. He was a WAPT from 1970-74 and WJTV from 1965-70. He did radio from 1957- 65.

Ah, Bert Case. He'll always be remembered for doing this story on then-Mississippi Governor Kirk Fordice.

... and somewhat for this candid moment against a stray dog.

Not a fan of the solid blue "4". It gets blended in with that dark blue background.

Wait, there two different version there. Is the bug that's featured still their official logo and the one they use on air? It looks sooo tacky as it always has with that white box behind it. The new solid blue 4 is a VAST improvement (although yes, they could maybe add some type of black or white outline to it)

San Antonio Station Issues Apology After Meteorologist’s Racist MLK Slip

By Kevin Eck on January 17, 2014 9:58 AM

KABB_Martinez_MLK.jpg

San Antonio FOX affiliate KABB has issued an apology for what meteorologist Mike Hernandez said near the end of yesterday’s 6:00 a.m. show.

Hernandez was wrapping up the seven day forecast. When he got to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day he said, “Look at the highs bouncing back through the weekend and into Monday for Martin Luther coon..Martin Luther coo..uh, King day.”

The station posted an apology to its facebook page that read in part, “We do not tolerate this language. We sincerely apologize to you, our viewers, for the use of this offensive language on our air. Please know that we take this seriously and we are taking action internally.”

The reaction on facebook was overwhelmingly in Hernandez’ favor, though only a few were from African-American viewers. One viewer wrote, “If he is released from his duties we will boycott your channel. Don’t make it more then (sic) a simple blunder. You should have left it as is. Shame on you for exploiting it.”

Edit 7AM: You know the other day I said Katie Vossler joined channel 12 as a meteorologist. I have found out she's doing weekend evenings, and the 4pm was just a way to welcome her in. Looks like longtime weekend evening meteorologist John Honoré is out. You can no longer access his bio through their bios page but you can still access it through a back link. He also took his station facebook page down. Oh well, I liked John. Thanks KSAT for letting him go without telling us but this is typical of most news stations nowadays.
