Melissa Newton announced on her Twitter account on Thursday (October 11) that she will be leaving Dallas CBS owned-and-operated station KTVT, where she has been a morning reporter since June 2009, to join her husband in Oklahoma City. Newton married Damon Lane on September 22, Lane has been a meteorologist for KOCO in Oklahoma City since August 2009, initially seen on the station's weekend morning newscasts before moving to the weekday morning show the following year. He has reportedly been promoted to chief meteorologist at KOCO, a position that has been open since Rick Mitchell left the Hearst Television-owned ABC affiliate in August after an 18-year run at the station to become the 4 and 10 p.m. meteorologist at Fort Worth-based NBC station KXAS (in which Mitchell will assume the chief meteorologist position currently held by David Finfrock after Finfrock retires following the 2018 expiration of his current contract). Newton’s last day at KTVT will be on November 21.

This will be Newton's second go-around in Oklahoma City as she previously worked in the market for brief stints at two stations: first as weekend anchor/reporter at Sinclair Broadcast Group's Fox affiliate KOKH and then for an even shorter-lived reporting stint at KOCO, both between 2006 and 2008. David Bark, author of the UncleBarky.com blog, reports that there are sources that claim that Newton is being courted by two of the four local news outlets in the area to become a full-time anchor, meaning that she could rejoin KOCO or KOKH, or even join CBS affiliate KWTV or NBC affiliate KFOR.

And on a difficult note, All of us at TVNewsTalk want to offer our prayers and hopefully a full recovery to WJW FOX 8 News Morning anchor Stacey Frey. Stacey announced on the air this morning that she has been diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer.

“This will be my last day working at Fox 8 for a little while,” she said, sitting between her husband and her son on the WJW set (video above). “I discovered a lump a couple months ago, and it turns out that I have breast cancer.”

Frey, a general assignment reporter at the Cleveland Fox affiliate since 2002, said she will undergo surgery tomorrow and will be off the air for four to six weeks while she recovers.

The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reports that WGNO chief meteorologist Bruce Katz is leaving the ABC affiliate for rival Fox affiliate WVUE after 17 years. Katz said the station's recent switch to an unconventional format (News With A Twist) is the reason why. Katz now does weather on the 10 pm regular newscast only while meteorologist Hank Allen does the forecast for "Good Morning New Orleans" and the 11 am newscast.

Katz leaves WGNO after the November sweeps, but won't be on air until spring next year because of the non-compete clause.

You know things are going bad at WGNO when another talent since who's been at the station since its inception finally got sick of it and leaves. Won't be surprised if WGNO has no news department this time next year.

Ryan Klund, a multimedia journalist for ABC affiliate WBND-LP/South Bend, was arrested on Thursday (November 1) on felony sexual conduct charges after a woman reported an incident that occurred at a party in South Bend on April 29, in which she, Klund and a group of acquaintances had been drinking at a friend’s residence during the gathering and at a local bar; the woman told her friends she felt she was going to vomit and went into the apartment's bathroom. Klund came into the bathroom uninvited and started “rubbing the victim’s exposed genital area with his hand … and kissed the victim’s bare buttocks.” Klund left the bathroom after the woman yelled at him to stop.

The documents filed Wednesday (October 31) in St. Joseph Superior Court show that Klund has been charged with two counts of sexual battery. The accuser stated she did not consent to the sexual acts and that Klund had made advances toward her throughout the evening, even as her boyfriend was in the apartment at the time. Klund’s bond was set at $25,000. Klund had last reported for WBND on Monday, though in light of his arrest (which was reported by WBND during their newscasts Thursday), his bio has been stripped from the station’s website.

CBS affiliate WKYT/Lexington, Kentucky will debut weekend morning newscasts on Saturday (November 10). The newscasts will run for two hours on Saturday mornings (from 6 to 8 a.m.) and for one hour on Sunday mornings (from 8 to 9 a.m.). The newscasts will be anchored by weekend evening anchor Elizabeth Dorsett with meteorologist Keri Hall providing weather forecasts, though Dorsett will helm both the morning and evening weekend newscasts until December, when general assignment reporter Brittany Pelletz will take over as anchor of the weekend evening broadcasts.

WFTV meteorologist Brian Monahan will be leaving the Orlando ABC affiliate to join CBS affiliate KIRO-TV/Seattle. Monahan will serve as meteorologist for the weekday morning newscasts in early December. Monahan's last day at WFTV will be on Saturday, November 17.

Ray Antony Miles, who barged into the newsroom at CBS affiliate WIBW/Topeka and assaulted four station employees in May, was convicted Thursday (November 8) on charges on four felonies: three counts of aggravated battery and one count of making a criminal threat, and was also found guilty of misdemeanor counts of battery and criminal damage to WIBW's studios. Miles attempted to exit the courtroom during the proceedings, as reported by the Topeka Capital-Journal:

"Miles sat on the bar in front of the gallery while four officers were within 10 feet of him. He didn’t show any reaction to the verdicts. In an incident Thursday before closing statements, Miles tried to exit the court after he became disgruntled with the proceedings. Corrections officers immediately cuffed his hands behind his back, then led Miles to the judge’s conference room so jurors waiting in the hallway wouldn’t see him led away in handcuffs... A few minutes earlier, Miles told [shawnee County District Court Judge Evelyn] Wilson that he had concerns about his civil rights. Miles said he wanted a new attorney, a new judge and a new trial. Wilson denied Miles’ requests."

Finally some sad news, Jeannie Hayes, anchor at Rockford, Illinois NBC affiliate WREX died Thursday (November 8) from complications of leukemia at the age of 29. Hayes had only been diagnosed with advanced leukemia on Tuesday (November 6), and additionally was diagnosed with a bladder infection when she sought medical treatment on Monday (November 5). After making a call to 911 on Tuesday after her condition began worsening and following her leukemia diagnosis, Hayes underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday, subsequently falling into a coma. Hayes joined WREX in 2005, and was anchor of the station's noon newscast shortly before her death. All of us at TVNewsTalk send our heartfelt condolences to Hayes' family (she leaves behind her parents and two sisters) and her WREX colleagues.

American Spirit Media : Raycom :: Mission : Nexstar

Also, the "[market] News Now" appears to be a new naming standard in the Raycom group, probably started with Hawai'i News Now over in Honolulu but more in earnest when KOLD took over KMSB in Tucson.

Two reporters are leaving WWBT (Richmond, VA)...

Today (Nov. 21) is Andy Jenks' (reporter and anchor of NBC12 News Today: Sunday) last day with the station. Later this month he will be joining the Henrico (pronounced hen-RY-coh) County public school system as the new director of communications.

Reporter Nicole Bell (who covers the Tri-Cities - the area south of Richmond where I live, not the Tennessee one - for the station) is also leaving the station after seven years. Yesterday (Nov. 20th) was her last day. She starts next month as the new director of communications and public relations for Petersburg Public Schools. As a Petersburg resident, I say congrats and good luck!

WISH-TV 8 Chief Meteorologist Steve Bray is now officially named News Director. “Steve’s varied and experienced background in news and weather, as well as his dedication to being a first informer with digital and on-air, makes him the ideal candidate to lead our news department,” said WISH president and general manager Jeff White.

“Steve has made a tremendous positive impact in every one of his many roles at WISH-TV. I look forward to this success continuing as news director.”

Bray has been interim news director for the Indianapolis CBS affiliate since the departure of Patti McGettigan in August. He joined WISH in 1995, working his way up the ranks after being promoted chief meteorologist in 1999, then news operations manager in 2009 and assistant news director in 2011.

However, (I think) while Bray continues to do the weather at 5:30pm, there is still no word on who will take Bray's place as Chief Meteorologist.
