WALA already has a 10:00 p.m. newscast five nights a week, but they don't have a 6pm.  If they landed NBC, they could add a noon and a 6:00 p.m., and simulcast the rest from Fox 10 outside of network programming.

Another wrinkle....
According to Nexstar's 2022 annual report, their CBS affiliations are only under agreement through June of next year.  Sinclair's NBC affiliations are only good until the end of 2024.

With CBS losing the SEC after this fall, CBS is going to be far less valuable to WKRG than it's been in the past.  Even with the NFL, its the AFC while the New Orleans Saints are primarily on FOX and WALA.  WEAR is locked into ABC until 2026 and will be the new "home" of the SEC (along with ESPN) beginning in 2024.

After seeing what happened to NBC after WRAL picked them up (worst to first), Nexstar and WKRG may jump at the chance of landing NBC.  The bigger get may be getting Sunday Night Football and the Today Show, along with the NBC Nightly News.

As for CBS, if they're fine with landing on WPMI.....they would get more programming time in the morning, TPIR, Y&R, B&B, and they would get way more NFL games than they do now, plus better sports on the weekends (minus the SEC)...and they would be fools not to bring back a noon show, which is usually a CBS station's meal ticket to win a time slot (thanks to TPIR/Y&R).

Of course, Gray could still pull for CBS or NBC as well (as a .2), especially if landing CBS was tied to a bigger deal that kept WANF as a CBS affiliate.

There’s some clarity but then not really. Why Erica Simon and not one of the 4 anchors you already have in the afternoon block? Melanie, Elissa, Mayra and Briana are all right there and instead you’re bringing in a 5th anchor. I’m not understanding management at KTRK. The weekend evenings slots are the only ones that make sense, everything else from mornings to night are in chaos.

Gina said she's not retiring, but I'm not buying that, long-term. I give her 2 years. Melanie isn't getting any younger, either, so MAYBE they're future-proofing their main evening line-up, but that still doesn't explain the multiple one-show anchors during non-traditional hours. Again, most of those folks carry other assignments (traffic, sports, field reporting), but it still feels cluttered.

Really, what is their deal, over there? BY MY COUNT (let me know if anything has changed), KTRK puts out 9.5 hours of news, each weekday, as do KABC and WPVI, and yet they have way more anchors. Outside of the morning shows and whatever role Simon is taking on at 10pm on 13, note that 3rd anchors (looking at you, 6abc) are in contributing roles. The question mark count is also for where there are apparent vacancies. I know some of the KTRK folks have other on-air roles, like Winkler and Rivas, but goodness, they're an insanely bloated operation.

This chart makes me wonder if WABC or WPVI or WTVD will start a 3pm newscast with Rachael Ray ending and vacating the 2pm spot (GH would move to 2pm).

KTVT has been unable to show newscasts since a little bit after 4:30 this afternoon due to a lightning strike. They showed CBSN during the 4:30 and 5pm half-hours and reran the CBS Evening News at 6pm. Their three subchannels are down as well. KTXA is still functioning normally. As of this writing, the problem has still not been fixed.

UPDATE: As KTVT/KTXA also houses CBS News’ innovation lab, CBS News NOW couldn’t be produced tonight.

UPDATE 2: KTVT’s newscasts have returned to air starting with the 10pm tonight.

And, at least SBG isn't holding the employees they screwed to non-competes. Not that they would hold up in court if they tried.

KTRK has always had different pairs anchors for different weeknight broadcasts aside from 6&10pm. Years ago, Erik Barajas and Illona Carson used to anchor Eyewitness News at 4pm, Melanie and Art Rascon anchored Live at 5, Dave Ward and Gina Gaston anchored the 6&10pm. They broke EWN at 6 into two half hours as a stepping stone to push Dave Ward out, which was a huge mistake because Dave built that station to what it was.

Brhe Berry left Channel 13 months ago.

The station isn't bloated. In fact compared to a few years ago, is grossly understaffed and steaming stretches the station too thin. They don't have an investigative reporter, or a full time sports reporter other than the Eyewitness Sports director, they don't have a morning traffic anchor, Action 13 reporter, or 13's HealthCheck reporter either. They skip the sports segment at 6&10pm all the time now after the station forced Bob Slovak out.

KTRK doesn’t do morning traffic?!?

It sounds crazy, but I kid you not! I don't know what KTRK is thinking, but they haven't had a morning traffic anchor in over two years! All they do is show SkyEye 13 over one accident and it goes something like this:

6:35am -- SkyEye is over the accident at x and y roads

6:40am -- Here's another look at SkyEye over the same accident

6:45am -- Welcome back. Check out that backup because of that same accident

6:55am -- The accident finally cleared.

That's literally what happened from a few days ago. They didn't show any Transtar JamCams, any other traffic, and that day didn't even show any drive times.  Eyewitness News This Morning is so repetitive these days. It's just so strange with a 3-anchor tag team reading a 4-5 words each in the lead into a story. It's just too choppy.

Just spotted former KUSI evening weather anchor Francella Perez on KNSD filling in. She may be a permanent hire vs. freelance because the her lower third had an NBC 7 Twitter handle (though it isn't live on Twitter yet). Maybe she's the permanent weekend weather anchor.

Meteorologist Bud Ford is leaving KTUL for a second time to do another adventure outside of tv. If you recall he was at KTUL 2010-2012/2013ish and left to focus on his radio show he was doing in St Louis (Bud and Broadway) then came back to KTUL in 2020 during the pandemic leaving St Louis and the radio show. He hasn’t announced where he is heading or what he will be doing but mentioned college where he’s heading. He also loves doing jokes and picking on his co workers while doing the weather. https://ktul.com/good-day-tulsa/segments/take-a-look-back-at-some-of-our-favorite-moments-with-bud-ford-on-good-day-tulsa?fbclid=IwAR3L727czomHfsU7ym_qCwu0P6q23H_n2v7b-u23_84uIAmo_eMtihwOASY

Surprised KGTV didn't make the move on Francella Perez for the weeknight evening slot for weather now that Angelica Campos is no longer at the station as of May 26

Now here's an interesting business venture.

Apparently, Lilly (or an affiliated venture) has a fitness center in Erie using the "Erie Fitness Now" name, using the exact same logo as their "Erie News NOW" logo.

Their website even has a link to "Erie News Now"

They even do fitness segments on WICU and WSEE.

If it's an affiliated venture, (or even sponsored), shouldn't that be disclosed, even though it's painfully obvious?

WKYC is retooling again…silly newscast names remain for the morning, 7pm and 11pm…

And we're going to come back in a few months to do another "retooling"......

How they can maintain stability when they constantly shuffling their on-air talent around?

Dr. Phil's a goner in a month or two, so dare I say it....3 News at 3?

Considering they’re swapping NBC News Daily into Dr. Phil’s 3:00 slot (presumably taking the newscast’s Central Time late/Mountain Time early feed), not likely for now. Plus, Dr. Phil (which ‘KYC is shipping to the 1:00 hour) is still going to be in reruns for the foreseeable future.

Not to mention, they just have so many anchors…NINE people playing the “anchor” role in the afternoon and evening newscasts, yet down in Columbus - Tegna sister station WBNS has two anchors for 5, 6 and 11…

It’s also three more anchors than top-rated WJW…

Seems a bit bloated if you ask me!

WSOC has already replaced him with Family Feud at 4pm. He is still airing on WAXN at 10am.
