It seems at this point, stations are cutting out all of the "non-essential"-ness in their coverage.

Some stations have suspended their lifestyle programs outright, others have pushed them into reruns, and others have adjusted to the new reality we are all facing at this moment.

There may be some tone-deafness in all of this, hopefully it's because the station just threw on a repeat episode.  And sometimes, they'll be promoting an event (in a pre-recorded segment long before the chaos) that's been LONG cancelled along with everything else in society these days...and if any station is just airing it to recoup some lost $$$$, SHAME ON THEM!

Here in Savannah, they’re not even bothering with spacing anchors all over the set. All 3 stations only have 1 news anchor per newscast. The only exception is WTOC’s local talk show Morning Break, which had 2 hosts at the main desk and one at a stand up area.

As for expanding newscasts, WTOC has expanded their existing half-hour 4pm news to a full hour, bumping Right This Minute to 1:30am. Further down Chatham Parkway, WJCL is not adding any news to their schedule. WSAV is following WNBC’s lead and they are live from 11pm-midnight. Unfortunately, their advertorial at 11:30am is still in place. They already have midday news at 11a, so they should expand it to a full hour.

Also, yesterday SAV rebroadcast last year’s St Pattys Day Parade since this year’s was cancelled for obvious reasons. I guess they didn’t want to give refunds to advertisers or something.

For the record, WTOC expanded their 4PM news to an hour like a month or so before this so the expansion is NOT related to COVID-19.

This is the report I put out about that back on February 15th: https://changingnewscasts.wordpress.com/2020/02/15/small-minor-newscast-changes-321/

Talk about full circle.  His home base was Kansas City when Newport Television was operated there.

Going back a few KCTV GM's....Bobby Totsch was let go and ended up in Mobile after Sinclair took them over from Newport.  He's now in Des Moines at WHO.

Wait, are you saying that Henrich can't come into the building on April 1 to start his new job?

It's happening in other places across the country, and in Mobile, WALA has suspended production of their Studio 10 lifestyle program in favor of another hour of news in the morning at 9 a.m.

It wouldn't surprise me if WPMI did the same by putting Gulf Coast Today on hiatus and making their noon show a full hour again.  Due to their ownership situation, they are landlocked with the number of hours of news they can produce... Could the FCC make an emergency declaration to temporarily suspend this?

The FCC appears to be going down this route. They have issued guidance opening up waivers of the 15% weekly programming time limit for stations operated under brokerage agreements to offer additional news programming they couldn’t run otherwise under current rules for as long as the pandemic is considered a national emergency.

From Broadcasting & Cable:

Quote

As a result, it said individual licensees can request a waiver if such added coverage could run afoul of ownership rules, and can even do so by email to expedite the process, the bureau said, a break with traditional process and a clear indication it is inclined to grant the waiver during the pandemic, though the bureau said it is still a fact-specific, case-by-case process.

It also pointed out that the waivers would only last as long as the pandemic "remains a national emergency."

The bureau also said that licensees seeking a waiver "should describe how additional coverage would assist in providing community-specific information regarding COVID-19 and how such needs would be better met by allowing for the production of additional news and/or informational programming by the brokering station."

Also of note, WMC-TV has formed a partnership with Shelby County Schools (the district encompassing Memphis and its suburbs within the county to offer distance education telecourses for language arts/English, science and math for students from pre-K to 12th Grade on its 5.2 subchannel (relegating Bounce TV programming on that subchannel to nights and weekends mainly) starting today. This lasts likely until the district is able to either resume in-person classes or the calendar school year ends.

It’s interesting that the school district approached WMC to do this, since telecourses have historically been broadcast on PBS stations (like Memphis’ local PBS member station WKNO and nearby Mississippi Public Broadcasting and Arkansas PBS [fka Arkansas Educational Television Network]) and other non-commercial educational stations.

I thought the same thing... my opinion is that SCS's deputy chief of communications, former WMC reporter Jerica Phillips, may have played a role. Just a thought.

Another programming note from Georgia. WSB produced a one hour town hall featuring the state's governor. All the stations in Atlanta teamed up to conduct interviews for the program. WSB talked with the governor first, WAGA spoke with a medical expert, WXIA had Atlanta's mayor, and WGCL interviewed the state's emergency management director. Univision's O&O and Georgia Public Broadcasting also participated. Near the end of the special, each interviewer asked the governor one question. The town hall was simulcast across the state on all commercial and public stations.

Two employees at CBS 46 (WGCL) tested positive for Covid 19

Two unnamed CBS46 employees have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“Both individuals are doing well,” according to a CBS46 (WGCL-TV) statement released today.

This past Saturday, the station broadcast its 6 p.m. newscast outside the building while “our cleaning crew deep cleaned the facility with CDC recommended cleaning products.” The CBS46 offices are on 14th Street just east of I-85 not far from Georgia Public Broadcasting.

CBS46 declined to say who specifically has the virus, citing privacy issues.

“We had already taken measures to operate with as few employees as possible onsite and the station and studio are cleaned twice daily per CDC guidelines,” the statement said. “Given our civic responsibility to the citizens of the Atlanta metropolitan area, WGCL CBS 46 will continue to provide news and information to the community.”

KTRK weekday 3:00 and 6:30 p.m. anchor Chauncy Glover announced Thursday that he has tested positive for coronavirus and is under self-quarantine.

The disclosure from his Facebook account:

Quote

For days I anchored the news telling viewers about Coronavirus, also known as Covid19. I talked about new cases and gave viewers detailed info on how to stay safe. Last week I had to take my own advice after waking up in the middle of the night disoriented, in a horrible sweat. I had a tightening in my chest, was hot with a temp of 101 and had horrible body aches. I called my doctor. I did a virtual visit with a specialist. That doctor referred me to get tested for Covid19. I self quarantined as I awaited my results. A week later, I got the call saying I tested positive for the Coronavirus. I’m now home recovering. Thankfully, I’m feeling better, and through the worst part. I’m so blessed. God was with me. He always is! Please take this seriously friends. Stay home, take care of yourselves and if you’re showing symptoms—CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

Love y’all.

Random question, not sure if this is the right place to post. When it comes to 30 Rock's NBC operations, I noticed there's no satellite dishes on the top of the building, just the doppler. Is everything fibered or microwaved in from another location? I noticed CNBC in New Jersey has quite the dish farm at their facilities, maybe microwaved in from there? Many thanks.

When I saw the listings, it was on those four plus WATL, WUPA and GPB Radio.

FBN has terminated Trish Regan after her comments that the coronavirus was an attempt to impeach the president. What a full from grace for her.

At the risk of sounding speculative, bank on Newsmax to almost certainly pick her up.

I’ve always been skeptical that someone like that really believe 100% of what they say...

Is she really Actually that much of a conservative that she believes in virus as impeachment ploy Or could she have been faking it because that’s where she was and what that audience wants to hear?

My thoughts as well. She was a perfectly competent anchor at CNBC and Bloomberg so I'm not sure where she went off the deep end.
