A happy 69th anniversary to WFAA....

from Dallas Historical Society FB page:

September 17, 1949, WFAA TV Channel 8 in Dallas-Fort Worth (ABC) begins broadcasting.

The initial application for the TV station was filed October 23, 1944, when local businessman Karl Hoblitzelle, owner of movie theater chain Interstate Circuit Theatres, applied with the FCC to obtain a construction permit & license to operate a TV station on VHF Channel 8; it was the first such license application for a TV station in the Southern United States. Hoblitzelle planned to operate the station out of the Republic Bank building in downtown #Dallas. Texas oil magnate Tom Potter filed a separate application for the Channel 8 license and was ultimately awarded the permit over Hoblitzelle. The station first signed on the air at 8:00 p.m. as KBTV, with a 15 minute ceremony inaugurating the launch of Channel 8 as its first broadcast; KBTV broadcast for one hour that evening, with the remainder of its initial schedule consisting of its first locally produced program, the variety series Dallas in Wonderland. In Jan. 1950, Belo purchased KBTV from Lacy-Potter for $575,000; the sale received FCC approval on March 13, 1950, with Belo formally assuming control of Channel 8 on March 17. The station was the first television property to be owned by the Dallas-based company, and also served as the flagship station of its broadcasting division until Belo merged with the Gannett Company in 2013. Four days later on March 21, Belo changed the station's call letters to WFAA-TV to match those of its new radio partner WFAA (570 AM, now KLIF).

What do the call letters stand for? Working For All Alike although the radio station later billed itself as the "World's Finest Air Attraction".

I don't think that is the name of the show. It's a hashtag they want the viewers to use.

Don't worry. They'll still be in 3rd/4th place even with all the social media ridiculousness that buys management a few more months. "LOOK WHAT WE DID, CORPORATE!"

Ah, yes... “NXT on #HTownRush...”

Unfortunately, NXT is the name of the developmental league for WWE (i.e., a place for up-and-coming wrestlers and those just starting out to hone their craft in terms of promos, in-ring ability, and the like), so Tegna cannot use NXT in promos.....

But they’ll find something more creative (this is Tegna we’re talking about, after all).....

More Houston news, it looks like KTXH My20 (sister to FOX O&O KRIV) is bringing back it's former 1980's slogan...sort of. Say hello to My20 Vision. It debuts Monday Sept. 24.

I like it. Definitely more creative than something like "Fox 26 Plus".

That's not really how that works. First off, NXT is not the brand, it's a graphic that's a stylized shortening of the word "next". Second, whatever trademark WWE has for "NXT" would be limited to wrestling. In fact, since I found it, the registrations WWE has for "NXT" are essentially limited to merchandise related to the league and wrestling broadcasts on TV and online.

A quick search of the US Trademark database lists 200+ trademarks using "NXT" (including at least six that are exclusively the letters "NXT") as trademarks for things like

  • Artificial turf

  • Sports drinks enhanced with minerals; Sports drinks, namely, performance drinks; Sports drinks, namely, recovery drinks

  • Retail store services featuring manufactured homes

  • management of multi-tenant living facilities

  • Vacuum cleaners and vacuum cleaner parts

  • Semiconductor lithographic machines, namely, lithographic machines used to manufacture semiconductors, and structural parts therefor

  • Water treatment equipment, namely, water filtration units.

  • Electric battery fast chargers

TL;DR There's nothing stopping them from using a graphic that says "NXT" in promos.

How did we all miss this...

Justin Draper is the new GM at KOVR.

https://www.adweek.com/tvspy/cbs-taps-justing-draper-as-kvor-gm/208150

warning, warning, warning...

Draper is a CBS bean counter.

Not a sales weasel...

Not a news pig...

Not a production or engineering nerd...

Draper is a Bean Counter. x2

Pay very close attention to what happens at KOVR with this guy because he will be setting the tone for all the other OnO's in the CBS chain.

If he makes a big splash in the Sacto River then expect CBS to shoot him up the ranks real quick.

Draper has one job.

Get KOVR "on financial track" asap....and then the rest of the chain shall follow.

he can't be much worse than jay howell... who essentially hit the ground running with projects to automate the control rooms... said goodbye to expensive talent and redundant management... loved bonded cellular over anything else (which has blown up on air multiple times)... he also implemented a cheap-o way to telecast the local minor league baseball games... taking the feeds of the team's in-house stadium cameras and sending them back to the station over cheap IP encoders (not fiber, some wireless junk) where they are switched... blew up right before the first telecast and almost sank it... if the engineers hadn't been clever... he is cheap cheap cheap!!!

KOVR is ripe for some bean counting... good day sacramento takes up tons of resources (sac has a huge creative services team... half of which seem to exclusively work on good day material...) and makes little profit... who wants to bet a year from now it's reduced to an hour long infotainment show??

KOVR is where they are slipping bean counters into the "good ol' boys" club that is CBS GMs...

TD: "We can't take Three yet...it's still buffering..."

Yup that's cheap!

Thank you for the info, Weeters; apparently NXT must be popular among trademarks (ha ha ha)!! :D:D

Last night was Kevin John's last night as sports anchor at KYTX. They said on their Under the Lights (high school football) show that he's on to work in Sacramento, but didn't mention which station. According to his bio, which is still up on KYTX's site, for now (https://www.cbs19.tv/article/about-us/team-bios/kevin-john/501-319117827), he is from northern CA and is getting his master's from University of San Francisco. So it looks like a homecoming of sorts for Kevin. Good luck to him.
