  • Washington DC's WUSA CBS 9 has announced Jan Jeffcoat will join the CBS affiliate as co-anchor for the evening news. Jeffcoat left Chicago’s WFLD last year to co-host the Scripps nationally syndicated talk/news show “The List.” Jeffcoat was formerly the morning anchor of KRIV FOX 26 from 2004 to 2007. She will co-anchor the station’s 5:00, 7:00 and 11:00 p.m. news alongside Derek McGinty. Her first day on air will be Sunday, September 22, the night the station airs the Emmy Awards.

  • Indianapolis WISH-TV CBS 8 has expanded its morning newscast, moving the broadcast’s start time up to 4:30 a.m. The weekday morning newscasts are anchored by Scott Sander and Lauren Lowrey, with meteorologist Randy Ollis and traffic reporter Julie Patterson. The newscasts now air from 4:30 to 7 a.m. on WISH and 7 to 8 a.m. on sister station WNDY, Indianapolis’ MyNetworkTV affiliate.

  • John Anderson has joined morning meteorologist Hollie Strano on the WKYC Channel 3 Morning News. Anderson, who replaces Chris Tye and Erin Kennedy, told his followers on facebook Saturday night, “Hi Everyone, tonight is my last show on the weekend working with Lynna Lai. Starting Monday, I’m going back to the morning show.” According to the Plain-Dealer WKYC’s 4:30 a.m. show has been trailing morning ratings leader FOX affiliate WJW. Anderson returned to WKYC in October 2012. He anchored the morning show between 2000 and 2007 before leaving to work at WTXF in Philadelphia.

Lockwood appears to be starting to make some changes at WSKY, even though it hasn't completed the sale yet. It has named John Cochrane as general manager. He was previously the general sales manager at WCSC in Charleston, SC and director of sales at WAVY and WVBT in Hampton Roads, VA.

A newsvan flip over on the highway this morning.

WINK states that its station's newsvan was flipped over on its side after one of its tires blew out on Interstate 75, near mile marker 112, in Naples, FL. News reporter Jennifer Ruffes and photographer Lucas Bogg were treated at a hospital with only minor injures, and they were later released.

WPMI launched their expanded morning and noon newscasts this past Monday. From what I've seen....they have some work to do on them.....

To start things off on a positive note, Kelly Jones is a real win to the station. She is definitely one of the better anchors to have ever done the morning show there in the past several years.

To put it nicely....the new social media anchor/reporter is an absolute trainwreck. It's like she's NEVER been on air before, and her delivery is horrible. To top it off, there are a lot of points in the newscast where all 4 of them (including Jordan) are on camera....she adds nothing other than ill-timed reactions and awkwardness. If I were in charge, I would immediately pull her off the show, or at the very least, KEEP HER OFF THE ANCHOR DESK and PRE-TAPE her segments so they don't look like someone stumbling through a bunch of words......Having her around could drive WPMI even further into the ground and ruin their attempt to even have a praying chance for their morning news.

As sanewsguy pointed out about most social media reporters being vanity and "eye candy"....she fits the bill 100 percent...

To make matters even more perplexing, for the new 12:30 segment, they have decided to keep current web content specialist Taren Reed to do exactly what she was doing before....REPORTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA! :bang: Unlike Jordan, she can actually read a teleprompter and does a decent job from what I've seen. At least they have a backup plan, or so we can only hope....

I'm hoping that Sinclair isn't bent on destroying a station that's already been in the dumper for practically it's entire existence. Whatever progress they have made since they went HD last year could be in serious jeopardy with Sinclair behind the wheel...

According to her WPMI bio (they didn't waste time posting it either), she was previously a producer in Orlando, West Palm Beach and New Orleans. Most producers, not all, are usually behind the scenes because either they don't want to be on TV but want to work in it, or suck really bad but still want to work in TV.

But she's young and she's blonde so she's qualified... :bang:

At least they made her clean up her twitter handle...

And Taren Reed looks nothing like Jordan Early, she looks like a "behind-the-scenes" type person. They probably know she's a lot better than Jordan, but let's be frank. Mobile is not big enough (or doesn't have enough traffic) to justify a separate traffic reporter. otherwise that's probably where they would've put Jordan. But with no traffic reporter, their excuse to get eye candy on the morning newscast is the dreaded "social media reporter". They probably do consider her a 4th member of the morning team, and in due time I'm sure Creative Services will start including her in promos. You probably don't see her at noon probably for the same reason you don't see traffic reporters at noon. No reason to have 'em on. They want Jordan on there n the mornings, when certain people (you know who) are more likely to watch than at noon when everybody's at work and not really watching the noon news.

I'm done with this rant.

As for traffic coverage on the Mobile stations....WPMI has traditionally never had a dedicated reporter...they've lumped it into weather coverage in the mornings and as a bump shot on the 5pm news using the Alabama DOT cams that are made available to all media outlets. WKRG and WALA use a service called "Skywatch Traffic" that does reports on their morning shows. The WKRG contributor used to Skype himself to the station, but now only uses an audio feed.

As for their handling of social media, WALA started doing this way back in 2008 during their 9pm news with their "Daily dot com" segments. They started with a dedicated reporter and now uses co-anchor Lenise Ligon for them. In the mornings, they have a tech segment that started out with Chasity Byrd and later Dani Dials when Chasity moved to the 4pm news.

Over at WKRG, Lauren (Styler) Vargas was originally hired to do social media...after she was promoted to weekend anchor, others including Tiffany McCall and Avery Cotton took over duties. Now that Avery is anchoring weekends, WKRG is hiring for a new one...

Yeah, so somebody's having a little too much fun. TVNT's favorite "social media reporter" comes up again as I was perusing her twitter feed. Let's just say tyrannical bastard is right, she should be pulled off immediately.

Look what I found:

She also complained that she didn't get ice in her drink at Taco Bell. This was on her station twitter. Honestly, who cares?

Excuse me a sec...

A KPNX news van was involved in an accident in central Phoenix after an SUV failed to heed a stop sign, sending the KPNX vehicle rolling into oncoming traffic and crashing into another car. Anchor Kim Covington and photojournalist Michael Falvo were injured; Covington was taken to a local hospital.

Also... What's up with the 70s/80s-look mic flags with this KBZK newscast? The Montana Television Network hasn't looked like that in a good 20 years. It's not just a one-off either. They look like new mic flags. Is this the logo used on their mic flags for statewide news stories?

WJZY, FOX 46 Carolinas, has started hiring people for their newscast, launching in January of 2014. Right now there are listings for anchors, reporters, and behind the scenes staff. Looks like not all of the hires will be internal. Look for WJZY on the FOX Careers website: http://www.21cf.com/JobSearch/Results/

This one caught my eye. Just judging by the job description, it looks like they want to start up something similar to

"Chasing Charlotte".

But my question is if all of Fox 46's newscasts will look similar to this.

http://www.21cf.com/JobSearch/Details/?jobId=10297#.UjooL9K-o4Q

"FOX 46 WJZY in Charlotte, NC is currently seeking an experienced PM- Executve Producer.

This will not be a traditional “2 anchors on the set” program. You must be able to think way outside the box and produce shows that include live and pre-produced material from our editorial staff as well as contributions from the community along with a highly interactive social media element. Your resume reel should not be filled with run-of-the-mill spots news/breaking news, but show a keen sense for enterprise and presenting information that will hold an audience. You will also be expected to contribute to our online/mobile distribution of news."

They still use that logo for the statewide Montana Television Network. I've seen it elsewhere on their sites in the recent past. It's very ugly and dated and I don't know why they've kept it.

Wow. It was introduced in the 1970s. The logos that went with it lasted until around 1993 for KTVQ and longer in quite a few cases. (See John in Montana's website: he has a bunch of videos from KTVQ demonstrating their version of this look into the 90s. Three of those are news opens with new themes, which have already been submitted by yours truly.)

Also see KPAX (the 18 is for Kalispell and that is now separate),

(now KXLF/KBZK) and KRTV (somewhere in the NewsActive3 collection, don't have time to go digging).

Michelle Apon has joined KSHB as their new meteorologist. She comes from KOKH in Oklahoma City. She's the replacement for Kalee Dionne, their weekend meteorologist who was promoted up to their weekday morning meteorologist after only 3 or 4 months, as she replaced Brett Anthony who had been there for a 11 years and is now the chief down at KJRH in Tulsa.
