WUAB will be making some major programming changes beyond the "CLE43" rebrand.

Current lineup:

Upcoming lineup:

WUAB-Q4-2015-Program-Schedule.jpg

Yes, for the first time ever, Cleveland will have a 9pm newscast. And WUAB has apparently conceded defeat after competing with WJW in the 10pm timeslot for 21 years.

WOW! There still will be a 10pm news just for 30 minutes so they still will compete for the first 30 minutes. Several things come to mind here. In 2001/2002 WKBD conceded to WJBK in Detroit during the 10pm hour. To see WUAB still with a 10pm in the television climate it only (30minutes) I guess the bottom line is they still see $$$.

  • What does FOX plan to do with MyNetwork TV? Will it cease airing anything or what will be BIG is during the 90s WUAB aired Hercules, Xena (oops forgot NBC commissioned the series) & those Action Pack Movies.
  • Will other affiliates shuffle MyNetwork TV to late night like WUAB is doing?

I don't understand why Fox didn't sell KTBC to Local TV back in 2007. They don't air either Cowboys or Texans games and for some reason Fox still keeps it, but why?

I though KTBC/Austin had always aired Cowboys games? They're the sister station to KDFW/Dallas and yet they (KTBC/Austin) doesn't show Cowboys games? I could understand why they don't show Texans games because they're an AFC team (CBS has the AFC package) but not showing Cowboys game? Inexcusable on their part.

KTVT has the rights to Cowboys preseason games in Dallas, and KEYE has them in Austin (but on tape delay on this occasion, probably because they had to carry the network game).

A look at the Cowboys network roster shows that it has quite a few Nexstar and Sinclair stations. Perhaps the contract dates to the Four Points days? If not, Sinclair stations in San Antonio, OKC and Beaumont do have the rights to the Cowboys.

There are a decent number of group deals with preseason games. The Falcons preseason network is composed in its majority in Raycom-owned Fox stations. The Quincy Wisconsin system holds the rights to the Packers in four markets. The Chiefs 65TPT network has a substantial chunk of Nexstar stations.

And, of course, a substantial proportion of NFL preseason broadcasters do not have regular season rights to the teams. There are a number of ABC, CW and independent stations, as well as NBC affiliates. The Cardinals network is KNXV-KWBA-KVVU, for instance (and I expect that at the next contract renewal Scripps obtains Cards rights for KTNV).

But what's the point of Fox still keeping KTBC to this day if they aren't in one of the Top 10 DMAs, aren't a legacy Fox station (They were with NW Communications before going to Fox), and aren't going to air Cowboys or Texans games, especially the former?

Well, they are on track to carry nine Cowboys games in the regular season and can theoretically have a maximum of 13 regular season contests a year (but they appear on NBC three times and ESPN once; they must have one Thursday night game and two CBS AFC games). It's not like KTBC isn't the home of most Cowboys games.

KTBC I think provides certain support services to KDFW and KRIV, particularly Texas government coverage.

The good news is that WUAB is reverting to being an "independent". Techically all MNT stations are indy so this does work. Also, WUAB might have to drop its 9pm news because it was tried on WSBK in Boston (pre-MNT) and it failed miserably.

They aren't dropping MNTV completely, just moving out of prime time into late night. I guess it makes sense in that it allows them to air the 9-10:30 newscast and keep all the advertising revenue from the sitcom reruns in prime time.

They originating stations for the preseason games are bid separately from the main package. As stated, KTVT handles the Cowboys while KTRK has the Texans.

If KTBC was concerned about airing (either) package they would have ponied up the money.

That being said, I'm sure Fox kept KTBC precisely because of the revenue generated by the regular season network broadcasts. There are also, as mentioned, certain synergies by having a station in Austin versus always sending a crew out to central Texas.

I mentioned it in the Scripps thread, but Dan Haggerty and Cristin Severance of KGTV will be moving to Dallas/Ft-Worth to join CBS 11 in September. Dan will be a weekend anchor and Cristin will be a consumer reporter at the station.

It was never failed. It was moved because it acquired the MyNetwork TV affiliation from WBIN in 2011.

Thoughts of the new logo from WKMG?

With the circle and square in the logo, it looks a bit busy. They should have kept the old logo and traded in the LOCAL top bar for NEWS, similar to what KPRC did when they de-LOCALized. At some level, I'm glad WKMG kept the same 6.

It's about time Raycom did something with WUAB. It's suffered under their control ever since they lost the Indians telecasts, and gave away their schedule (and most of their ratings) to WBNX over the next several years.

With recent revelations that Rev. Ernest Angley is cheating his employees (at his Cathedral Buffet subsidiary by classifying them as volunteers), it could be sooner rather than later that WBNX is duopoly bait for WKYC or WEWS. If that ever happens, expect WBNX to get into the 10pm news game too.

Why not add WJW to the duopoly picture? Where did the Indians telecast go? Back in the day this station along with a slew of stations had the games telecast? Did they get too expensive for stations to pay for? Indians, Cavs game would do great for WUAB. It seems that when 19/43 merge 43 was always the big dog, but when CBS move to 19 they totally forgot about 43 and poured all their resources into 19 instead of 43.

Is WKYC still airing Indians telecasts or did they completely migrate over to SportsTime Ohio?

If Tribune buys WBNX they could simply change the call letters to WGNX (a nod to the old WGNX which is now WGCL) and it's possible they could get the Indians telecast on WGNX.

Nevermind the leaps of faith some have about a theoretical sale of WBNX (personally, if it gets sold, my money would be on Nexstar for a standalone market-entry not unlike KASW)...

Fox owns and operates SportsTime Ohio, not Tribune. Master control is still run out of WKYC's facility (dating back to when the Dolan family - vis-a-vis the Cleveland Indians Baseball Company - owned the network, and WKYC operated it).

And in any event, WKYC's contract to simulcast 10-15 STO games per year runs for several more years.

I wouldn't be surprised if WUAB extends "Cleveland 19 News" to 9am and puts the E/I on Saturdays only. Also, don't be surprised if WUAB (finally) ends its 10pm news in 2017 in favor of (hopefully) a 6:30pm newscast.

If they did put a 6:30pm newscast, they would just lose in the ratings to news powerhouse WJW 8. Plus, they still lose in the morning news ratings to WJW 8, so even if CLE 43 added morning news at 8am and added a 6:30pm weeknight newscast, they would lose super badly to WJW 8. They would only win at 9pm.

It's another possibility. WJW absorbing WBNX would bring another CW affiliation into Tribune's fold and would give the largest independently owned & operated CW station to the largest operator. Doing so would prevent competition to their 10pm show. They could even take the KPLR approach if they had to for an 8pm SHOW!

Nexstar is another possibility since they purchased KASW in Phoenix. Cleveland is not far behind in market size and doing so would give Nexstar their first ever Ohio station.

I believe the Indians going away from WUAB was mainly a result of the Dolan Family (who owns the Indians AND Cablevision) wanting an exclusive cable deal with Fox Sports Ohio at the time. Dennis Kucinich (then a congressman) even lobbied for legislation requiring teams that had facilities funded with tax dollars to broadcast their games on "free tv". It went nowhere and the Indians packed up for cable, snapping 21 years of ratings success for WUAB. WUAB once had the highest MLB ratings of any station that carried games, and was a large factor in the station being carried out-of-market in such places as Erie, Columbus, Youngstown, and even Portsmouth!

The call letters WGCL have ties to Cleveland , as it was the longtime call letters for 98.5 until the mid 80s. It's been WNCX ever since.

Or take the KPTV/KPDX route and do 8 AND 9pm newscasts. If that was to happen, then the 9pm news on WUAB would be history.
