Adds a lot of validity to the rumors that they're about to dump their long-running "Action News" brand.

FTVlive agrees.....

It would solve the identity crisis by unifying WOIO under the CBS 19 brand, but it's been done before, and failed.

Action News has run its course, but the last thing we need is another news organization that thrives on the endless glut of social media and the web...

First, if CBS 19 drops the "Action News" brand, they can re-brand as CBS19 News or 19 Eyewitness News.

Anyway, WISH- TV8 Investigator Reporter/Anchor Karen Hensel is gone from from the new CW affiliate. Her bio from the stations site is gone.

Cleveland is one of those markets where the slogans have re-appeared on other stations over the years.

KYW (now WKYC) was the originator of Eyewitness News. It later lasted for almost 3 decades on WEWS from the 60s until 1990.

Action News was WKYC's brand from the late 70s until 1983-1984, when they adopted their longtime moniker "Channel 3 News" which is still in place today.

And "CBS 19" was the official station brand from 1996-2000. It replaced the inaugural "19 News" and "Cleveland Television News" monikers for their co-ownership with WUAB. It only re-appeared as the non-news brand when "Action News" was launched under Bill Applegate & Company...

And if they really want to succeed, they'll choose the "Hometeam 19" branding. :bang: :bang:

This was all Raycom's doing; as soon as WUAB lost the Indians in 2001, the branding was slowly eliminated until the great purge of 2002....

Ava Hurdle is retiring after 37 years with WAVY-TV. Her last report was tonight.

http://wavy.com/2015/01/07/ava-hurdle-retires-after-37-at-wavy-news/

Correct me if I'm wrong, but she's the second-longest-serving reporter in the Hampton Roads market, only surpassed by Nate Custer at WTKR (1966-2005).

I would think she'd have to be behind Custer in terms of local longevity (with Bruce Rader not far behind). Hope she enjoys her retirement.

Also, WVEC's Karen Hopkins is leaving to become Public Information Director for the Norfolk Sheriff's Department

WAVY now has 2 of the Hampton Roads Veterans in Bruce & Don, with Joe Flanagan at WVEC right behind them.

KCTV/KSMO promoted its Digital Sales Director to General Manager today. The former GM had been at KCTV for two years. I don't know what happened, but he had traveling frequently on the weekends back to Las Vegas, where he previously worked.

WTVR's Cheryl Miller and WWBT's Diane Walker are two of seven media professionals who will be honored this spring at the 2015 Virginia Communications Hall of Fame. Well deserved!

In what just might be a first anywhere, WTTW 11 Chicago (PBS) has sold the naming rights to...their anchorman. Phil Ponce, host of 'Chicago Tonight' will now be known as The Alexandra and John Nichols Chief Correspondent and Host. The Nichols have been longtime trustees of WTTW and parent company Window to the World Communications, Inc. No word, though, on how much this lousy money grab will bring in for the station.
