WJTV (and WHLT) new look coming?

Caught a glimpse of the possible WHLT logo moving forward last night during election coverage.

They were using the default Nexstar "Your Local Election Headquarters" graphics and the WHLT logo was the black one shown above, minus the WKRG "circle" Underneath was the slogan "Focused On You".

Why WJTV's version went to left field is beyond me, especially since WHLT is now just a WJTV pass-through with local ads....

On that logo, the 2 feels like it's floating in outer space.

There's too much of a gap space between the 1 and the 2 in that logo.

If the eye wasn't overlapping the 1 it'd probably look fine, otherwise yes, the kerning needs to be tighter by just a few pixels.

WJTV's web stream is (finally) working again, and the branding/on-air product is a complete mess right now.

-The old logo is still on the website and on their graphics.

-The interim logo is still on their facebook header and twitter page

-The NEW logo is plastered to the backs of their laptops on the anchor desk

-The old supers are still being used (no idea logo is being used OTA since WHLT is not coming through), and the "breaking news" ones have a totally different font on them.

-The weather graphics use the NEW CBS background with the existing package, and the set monitors are using the NEW CBS background.

Branding and on-air product both have been a mess for a long time. Their station cars still have the NC12 logos on them. *eye roll*

I would at least hope that there's nothing left with the old Ellis-era "JTV 12 News" logo...

I see it now. Although 1's require a little bit of tweaking when it comes to kerning (requiring a little more on most fonts), so it may have been left at default.

Could have been a rush job since the other logo is gone....

The kerning looks to be the same when compared to the "17" in WNCN's logo. Which is fine for that logo, but 2 does not equal 7.

WJTV should take a page from WKRG and adopt a gold ring around a 12, it goes with the blue/gold graphics better than a lighter blue/red boxed logo would. And then keep the WHLT logo the same.

Of course, they could run into an issue looking too much like Gray's WRDW.

How long has WJTV been in 3rd....since before the Nexstar take over?

WHLT has ALWAYS been a distant second to WDAM. Live and local....need I say more?

JTV’s decline has been ongoing for several years. The product, talent and management needs a major overhaul. It’s a very slow-paced product with a multiple identity issue.

WHLT will never have a chance now. They had a chance and were beginning to see ratings pickup when MG pulled the plug on the news department in 2001-2002. WHPM (FOX) has a 9p newscast produced by a company in Little Rock. WDAM is without a doubt the leader.

Thanks. We had a good team at HLT during the "Daily News" era. If only MG had given us more than 2 years...

Nexstar really needs to step up their game, especially in Hattiesburg. Even Meridian is no longer a one-newscast town as WMDN and WGBC have started "local" newscasts up again after long absences and giving the entire market to WTOK. In fact, the same company runs WHPM, the local FOX station that started up a few years ago there.

Instead, Nexstar has taken the little bit of local content left out of WHLT and left it to simulcast WJTV's news full-time. Now the folks in Jackson have to put up with news from Hattiesburg taking up time on their shows and the folks in Hattiesburg get little local news in return. Trying to pass it off as "live from the State Capitol" isn't working. While the later Media General efforts were lacking, these current measures lack even more.

It's my understanding that WHLT had been that way for the better part of 15 years or so. They also didn't have a website for the longest time, with their web address redirecting to CBS.com. Even now, they have a logoless "Pine Belt" section on WJTV's website. The market is apparently too small for Media General or even Nexstar to give a damn about. When it comes down to it, it's about money. Should we pour money and resources into quicksand in Hattiesburg? If you say yes, you don't know how business works.

It's all a case of too little...too late.  Had they signed on back in the 1970s,  WHLT may have had a chance.

WDAM is technically licensed to Laurel, with studios in the middle in Moselle.  Back then, Laurel was about the same size as Hattiesburg, with populations about 30K each.

Flash forward to today, Laurel has shrunk to around 18K and Hattiesburg is much larger around 48K.  WHLT is also based in the city of Hattiesburg.  But they signed on as a semi-satellite of WJTV in 1987 and have been linked together since.

As long as they can sell local ads and provide programming, it justifies its existence.   But even a weather cut-in or two establishes that link that could get them a few more dollars....

Plus, the more specalized content that WHLT has is the less Hattisburg news that Jackson viewers have to endure on WJTV...even though Raycom shares a LOT of content between all of their MS stations....

The skies were friendly this morning, as I was able to not only pick up WHLT, but the mothership, WJTV in Jackson.

Still rocking the old logo on screen....when will the rebrand (ever) happen?!?!?!?!?

I'll bet they're saving it for Super Bowl Sunday or the AFC Championship.
