Warner Bros. Discovery to Overhaul TruTV With Sports; Sets Nightly Block for Games and More

Quote

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to bring one of its “zombie” cable networks back to life with a big jolt of sports.

The media company intends to create a new nightly sports block for TruTV, the reality-series cable network that has largely been left to show endless episodes of the popular prank show “Impractical Jokers” and the caught-on-camera serial “World’s Dumbest.” In doing so, Warner no doubt hopes to create new value where there has only been a little. A new sports schedule would likely draw broader viewership and new ad dollars to the network, and might even spur cable distributors to accord the outlet more value in future carriage contracts.

TruTV isn't the only "zombie" WBD needs to deal with...

CNN has moved it's remaining Atlanta operations to Techwood, with a brand new set. Honestly refreshing to CNN have a nice set in Atlanta. According to the other site, it was actually supposed to be bigger, with an "upstairs" and taller callings. An AR extension is to follow that will add on to the set with virtual elements that were intended to be part of the original design.

What's been going on with Don Lemon (and Elon Musk)?

- Following his termination from CNN last year, both parties agreed to a $25 million settlement for which he'll be paid the remaining 3.5 years of his contract: https://www.thewrap.com/don-lemon-cnn-split-deal/

- He signed a deal with X (fka Twitter) to produce a show a la Tucker Carlson's deal with X

- The show launches next week with Lemon interviewing Elon Musk.  It's now reported that following the interview taping, Musk texted Lemon's reps to say he was cancelling the content deal. Kara Swisher reports Musk was particularly angered when Lemon started to ask him about his drug use.   https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/13/elon-musk-cancels-x-partnership-with-don-lemon-after-interview.html

- Allison Gollust, the former CNN comms executive with whom Jeff Zucker had a relationship, and who subsequently left CNN after Zucker left, is now Lemon's PR rep

- Lemon will return to CNN for the first time since his ouster tonight to talk with Erin Burnett about his interview with Musk

Something going on with Studio A/B's lighting? Honestly, this looks much better!

It kinda looks like Jake’s sitting in front of a flash cam, they’ve got The Lead background behind him on a screen and the lighting is just way easier to control in a smaller space. I could be wrong since I haven’t seen any other clips of the actual studio being shown. CNN’s flash cams always seem to have great lighting.

Just an observation. For two times today, CNN uploaded some of a newscast (The Lead and OurFront), like they always do, but instead of the CNN logo being where it is in the lower third or being absent all together, it was in the top left corner, faded. Reminds me of how European stations place their bugs (news channel, newscast, or even normal programming. The bottom corners seem to be just a North America thing) and honestly, I like this much better. On air is still the same ol same ol but honestly, if there were to be new graphics in the future, this format could allow for more room text, and just more elegant graphics. Just this idea alone would be something U.S TV has never seen and could be very nice.

CNN has been using that style of bug for online videos for years. Definitely doesn't match the TV look and perhaps it was simply a careless editing mistake.
