CNN: The Continuing Soap Opera

In this situation, it's not exactly clear if CNN is solely at fault for this. The Intercept article notes that their source wasn't the most reliable in the first place.

In essence, CNN should have used a better source than Lanny Davis, if he has such a history of lying in public statements ...and now what credibility it had has been jeopardized, because they trusted Davis when they should have verified instead of just trusting.

Why hasn't CNN retracted or corrected the 100000% fake story. Everybody else retracted the false story.

Who is CNN pretending to protect?

Not the "source" Mr. Davis.

Are they protecting the reputation of Carl Bernstein (google him kids) or are they just dead-set on poisoning the CNN brand forever?

Why do the owners allow this to continue. It's not like it's making any money. Is the DNC ready to jump in and support CNN through the next few years?

This is painful to watch.

It’s been incredibly painful watching Stelter and Oliver Darcy defend this on Twitter. This is now the second Russia “bombshell” CNN has blown and has refused to admit their mistake and retract the story.

And POTUS has capitalized on it:

Brian Stelter and Oliver Darcy among others have been blocking legitimate reporters on twitter that have question CNN's reporting about this story.

Everyone talks about Fox News having mainly older viewers (even though MSNBC and Fox average age of viewers is the same at 61). Fox News tops MSNBC and CNN in every major demo 18-34, 18-49, 25-54 etc.

Jeff Zucker should have never made it past his EP gig at Today.

This was the last time he actually succeeded at something. Ever since he took over in increasing roles at NBC, he destroyed that network until it was bought by Comcast. Even then, much of its success has been a result of the declines of everyone else.

And remember, HE himself was responsible for bringing on the Donald to The Apprentice...

Flash forward to CNN. Much of the damage has been done under his tenure, from the endless coverage of stories like the missing plane to the never-ending coverage of the Oval Office. CNN, like the rest of the media was guilty by falling for Trump's never ending yapping and inability to shut his mouth, and gave this man the greatest gift any political candidate could ever receive, endless FREE publicity.

After his election, someone finally had a stream of consciousness, and the endless coverage shifted to the antics that this president was generating. Of course, the "right side" used this as ammo to paint all of this smotherage as "fake news". Things are so screwed up, some of it deserves coverage. But there are other things going on in this world, and it's going to have to take a change at the top at this point to get back to the real issues we face, and so journalists can cover something else for a change. Leave the antics to the tabloids and whack-job partisan sites.....

I bet you Zucker, has no regrets about Trump being President, and how the daily coverage of the President. Yeah, it litterally like watching a reality show. Zucker, will be on at CNN through 2020. I never liked how he moved everything from Atlanta to NYC. CNN's HQ was started in Atlanta and I'm sure Ted Turner, is so pissed off about how his former Cable News Network has become. Zucker, an egomaniac just like any other executive. He wants the ratings, and looking at the ratings, CNN chasing MSNBC and have a some wins, but not the big dog it used to be.

The Sunday morning media shows aren’t even that good anymore. Reliable Sources on CNN has become nonstop apologizing for the media’s mistakes and endless Fox-bashing. MediaBuzz on FNC has become CNN-bashing and defending Trump’s media-bashing.

I watched Reliable thinking I would get real insight into how the media works. I was wrong.

For supposed "ombudsmans," Brian Stelter and Howard Kurtz fail spectacularly at those job positions. Kurtz gets ratings simply because of inertia: Fox could put in that timeslot a tap-dancing seal and a poodle riding a unicycle with a carnival music loop playing throughout ... and the ratings would still trounce CNN.

They should be promoted and identified as who they really are: opinion hosts.

If that's the case, then I hope there's a special place in hell for both of them....

Trump and Zucker are kindred spirits. They both failed their way upward, both specialize in outrageous stunts for attention (Zucker with "supersized" episodes of Friends, doubling the length of Today, making a mockery of NBC's late night lineup, and just being at CNN ... and Trump simply by his very existing.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Zucker and Trump have been collaborating on Trump's anti-CNN schtick. For someone with Zucker's mentality, he has to be relishing the free pub CNN gets every time. Who cares if Trump's supporters threaten the life of Jim Acosta when Acosta can milk that pub on Colbert, furthering CNN's brand awareness?

If we're talking about when CNN "committed suicide," it was with the Malaysian Air fiasco. That was a deliberate admission that they no longer wanted to be the credible news outlet they long promoted themselves as, but as a goddam circus instead.

And judging by the ratings, people aren't falling for it. Good.

Supersized episodes worked, not sure what you're complaining about there.

Your collaboration theory is way out there. Do you realize how idiotic that sounds?

The Malaysian Air fiasco was a true news story. Did they overdo it with coverage? Probably. I wouldn't label it as suicide though.

CNN's ratings downturn are likely a result of overcoverage of the current President, nothing more.

Only because Friends was the top-rated sitcom (and, for that matter, the top-rated show) on broadcast television at the time.

It was totally unnecessary and a cheap marketing ploy that no other broadcast network has tried since.

Who is in the White House right now? A 72-year old attention whore.

Who runs CNN? An attention whore.

Come on now.

MSNBC and Fox are also guilty of overcoverage, for the obvious reasons... MSNBC is seen as having taken the anti-Trump bent (despite having quite a few conservatives as pundits and hosts, their prime-time lineup is still decidedly liberal). Fox has always taken a mostly pro-Trump bent, and water is wet.

What really has CNN done but make a mockery of that polemic coverage? Consistently having six talking heads arguing back and forth and talking over each other is an outright parody and a train wreck of the worst sort. And that's just one facet of their overall coverage that is an embarrassment to the industry.

Anyone can see that CNN has a big-time credibility problem. Thing is, it's totally overshadowed by Trump supporters mocking the network out of this perception that CNN "isn't fair" to Trump.

Roger Ailes set up Fox as a network that carved out a definitive niche and imaged themselves as THE news outlet for conservatives, regardless of the age demo. And it worked... so much so that there any competition in the conservative TV news field (OANN, NewsMaxTV) cannot logically compete.

It just so happens that the majority of Fox's audience skews old, but at the same time, the vast majority of people with conservative viewpoints will be predisposed to watch Fox or access their digital properties.

It's all about brand loyalty and cumulative audience.

And in 15-20 years when they drop dead....?

The content delivery landscape will be totally different by then. Fox News is already starting to seriously ramp up their streaming platform Fox Nation. CBS already has CBSN. NBC and ABC are starting to get into the game, too.

The only thing that won't change is AM conservative talk radio, they're still stuck in 1988... and that will never change.

But will there be a sizable audience for it is my question... I don’t care if they deliver the content with smoke signals... in 20 years will anybody be around to care?

It’s not like folks magically reach 65 and turn on FOX... given that most of their current audience will be dead by 2038 and the younger generation skews way left of FOX I really think the whole concept is on borrowed time...

the younger generation, liberal or conservative, doesn't have any need for cable news with social media

Most of the younger generation has grown up around the internet. YouTube, MP3 players, the iPhone, Netflix... all game changers that have shaken up the entertainment industry and journalism to their cores.

Think about how radically different the world is today as opposed to 1998. There are options today that would have been unfathomable, even as Matt Drudge was shaking up the journalism world with his news aggregation site that also broke news.

Fox News will survive, but in order to do so, will need to adapt. Yes, there will be an eventual audience drop, but every outlet will be experiencing that soon. It's not rocket science. Comcast, Disney, Viacom, CBS... and even Nexstar, TEGNA and (gasp!) Sinclair... will all have no choice but to change with the times. Some will be successful, some won't. It's the nature of the beast.

What Fox News has done by dominating the ratings in an unprecedented scale can truly be considered as the final hurrah for traditional linear broadcasting, regardless of the content or political viewpoint. It is a rather extraordinary achievement that we will never see again.
