Any guess on whether they will hold off on a new set for WABC until this is complete. Could be 3 or more years.

Now would be the perfect time to spend a few million dollars on a new set...in a building that they are leaving...that has rats.

(to be continued)

For real, though, they completely renovated the newsroom just 3 years ago.

there is a reason they haven’t gotten a new set yet.... and this is it... it will last another 3 years no problem... how long did the old set last anyways?? and that one started on fire and wasn’t replaced...

remodeling a newsroom is different than building a new set.... all the pieces are “off the shelf”... a news set is custom built... and you can sell the office furniture and fixtures after you’re done with them...

Yeah, i'm sure by the time they lease and get everything complete with the relocation their current set will probably be out of date, as crazy as this may sound. I believe WABC has been in the street-side studio since 2011. So thats about almost 7 years already. They moved to the studio in September 2011. Their current set is beautiful though, no complaints about it.

  • 2 months later...

Official confirmation of Disney's purchase of 4 Hudson Square for WABC. They retain the lease rights for the UWS studio over the next five years while they build the new place.

The old place is going to Silverstein for $1.2 billion and Hudson Square cost $650 million before reconstruction.

Nice! Looks like they made a profit too. :). This means, the days are numbered for WABC's Street Columbus Ave / W 66th Street Studio. The ETA of Completion is 5 years?

It could be shorter. They have up to 5 years to vacate the UWS buildings.

Maybe then, we will finally see some mind blowing overhaul in graphics, on-air presentation, and looks since they are under new head management now. Correct me if I'm wrong of course, but this will be an interesting precedent set, because it will be one of the few if any, New York Area's tv stations that are located this far south of the Empire State Building. :).
