A new look from France 3: launching February 5

Since the news on France 3 has not had a major relaunch for about a decade and virtually no changes since 2010, I thought the channel's new look, which is set to premiere on February 5, deserves its own thread.

What France 3 especially interesting -- and challenging to refresh -- is that its newscasts are a combined local/national operation with the same basic visual identity being used for both.

This week, France 3's national newscasts are coming from the old interview set, which as been slightly modified. (Thanks to FranceTV on TVForum.uk for spotting this.)

An edition of 19/20 -- the national part -- from this week:

And here's what the regional news looked like before the changes. This is an edition of 12/13 for the French Alps; the other regions were similar:

Just realized the new logo for France 3 and that it has been adopted this week across all its channels.

France Télévisions adopted new logos for all its channels this week. Here's a good summary from Le Nodal (in French).

The last major rebrand of all the channels was about 15 years ago. I always liked the slanted page design and always thought something like that would be an interesting logo concept for a US local channel. The network continuity looks were also subtle enough that they had major design differences for each channel but tied in well to the mother brand.

The new dot motif seems a little boring and almost too simple to me, but it does tie in well with the franceinfo: look, which was executed very well. Maybe there's nothing to worry about. We'll have to see how the rest of it looks.

As for the news itself, I always thought the outgoing France 3 19/20h look was classy, and it outlasted several revamps of the flagship France 2 20h (one of the two main national evening newscasts).

The news on France 2 is in much more need of a rethink in my opinion. I've never been much of a fan of the current opening graphics, and it's a shame they dumped the old music.

This is what France 3's late-night news, Grand Soir 3 (soon to be known once again as simply Soir 3) looked like before its move to the temporary set:

Also note the program's Eurozapping segment (at the 13:20 mark) -- a look what's making news on other European broadcasters.
