WMC-TV Getting a New Set

In case anyone is interested, Kym Clark's Facebook Live videos from today have some behind-the-scenes looks at the temporary setup. She promised to take a look into the studio space during construction as well, so it's worth keeping an eye on.

  • 3 weeks later...

Per Joe Birch on his Facebook page this evening, the new set will debut this coming weekend (which is also Super Bowl Weekend).

It'll likely be a variation of the Raycom set-in-a-can similar to what WTOL and WAVE received, but we won't know exactly what the whole thing looks like until then as they have been very hush-hush about it.

I've been hearing the same thing from Kym Clark's Facebook page. (She never did post anything from the old studio post-dismantling, though. Sorry about that.) It sounds like they started rehearsals last Friday.

I'm surprised at how restrained they've been in talking and posting about it online! At the very least I would think they'd be marketing the big reveal for the post-Super Bowl newscast (regardless of whether it formally debuts earlier in the weekend)... but I guess there's still time for such ads to come out.

Also, this is old news now, but the backdrop on the monitor wall did indeed switch from the old set's backdrop to a live city shot a couple of weeks ago. (I think someone asked why that wasn't the case to begin with in another thread.)

Well as soon as I say that... they've gone and switched back to the old set's backdrop today! In their defense, it is a gray, dreary day today. Makes me wonder what their plan is on the new set for days like this. I imagine a live city shot is going to be their new normal... surely they wouldn't use this old backdrop on the new set on rainy days?? That would certainly be something to see...

I will say, however, that the old set backdrop looks much better today than its earlier iteration on the temporary set. Less pixelated. That's a complaint I've seen on Twitter regarding the skyline shots: the tight camera angles and odd lighting forced by the newsroom setup make the live views on the monitor wall appear very grainy. 20180201_121659.thumb.jpg.b281ff4507202758b5e6d9e5e4d47448.jpg

Mine aren't of much better quality either given that they're just pictures of my TV, but they're better than nothing I guess!

The very first shot of the 5PM was that overview of the new studio (which has also since closed the 5 and 6PM broadcasts). At the end of the 5PM, you could see everyone in the studio high-fiving and clapping each other. Neat!

As for my opinion on the studio (if anyone cares :D )... I'll have to get used to it, after being familiar with the old set for the past 11 years! Was hoping for a bit more woodtones to balance out the glass, but I suppose stone works too. It's something different anyway, which is always refreshing. Plus I do like how the backdrop changes based on the newscast. I wish there were a bit more of the yellow/gold color from their logo instead of just the blue and white, though.

(For what it's worth, I've never been a big fan of the modern aesthetic anyway, so it's nothing against this set in particular - just not my usual cup of tea)

One last word: The only real complaint about the new set after seeing it in action this morning is the quality of the Skycam feeds used for the "windows" behind the anchor desk, as some of them are still in SD (hence the grainy quality of the shots). They're supposed to be upgrading those cameras soon, so hopefully it won't be an issue for long.

Sorry for the double post. The station just uploaded a timelapse video of the set dismantling and rebuild:

That would have been a lot more enjoyable to watch if they didn't move the camera so much during the process nor edit the video every 2 seconds.
