There is some bad news coming from the Winston Broadcasting Network, part of Ernest Angley Minsitries and the owner of WBNX-TV in Cleveland and Akron.

What do you think needs to be done with WBNX?

What would

do???

Fire up the phone banks and start praying.

Can I get an "Amen"?

They were a top affiliate going back to their WB days; how do you mess that up?

I suppose one could maintain the stick without needing the studio, especially with the recent FCC rules passed about not needing a studio presence. Apologies if I get a bit speculative, but aside from that there are two easy ways this goes if the license/IP/stick needs to be sold: In the hands of TEGNA if they're still in a buying mood (KYC could bring local news back to Akron!), or this is the way Sinclair maintains a presence in the Cleveland DMA without needing WJW.

Angley definitely could make a buck on those two scenarios if he acted now, rather than wait for an auction to horrendously devalue his real assets.

I think WJW and a few other stations will go into the FOX hands, so WJW/WBNX together? Let see-

The issues have nothing to do with WBNX. If anything, it has been WBNX which has kept the rest of his operations afloat.

And it's an ego thing. Angley coveted the construction permit for TV55 ever since Rex Humbard's ministry fell apart under oddly similar circumstances. (To wit, next to the WBNX facilities in Akron is a concrete edifice that Humbard built AS the intended tower for the station he wanted.) He'll never sell until the banks force him to.

The sad thing is, Scott had an independent TV station of his own in Hartford CT, and let it decay (literally and figuratively) until he was forced to give it up in 1985.

A necessary bump to this thread. WBNX is losing its CW affiliation, and quite soon actually... WUAB will take over as Cleveland's CW affiliate starting July 16 (this coming Monday). The move will result in WUAB dropping its 9:00 p.m. newscast and re-extending its 10:00 p.m. news to a full hour.

And it's once again a dual affiliate-- it carried both the WB and UPN from 1995-97 until WBNX got the WB. This brings it full circle in a way.

The only reason why WUAB gave up The WB was because of their contracts to run both Indians and Cavs games OTA, which reaked havoc on juggling two networks with (at the time) partial schedules. Neither of those exist now, and MyTV is so irrelevant that it can be cleared between 1am-3am and no one would know otherwise.

But switching affiliations this coming Monday? The CW must know something about WBNX that we don’t if they made a switch this abrupt.

I think WUAB carries MyNetworkTV from midnight to 2:00 a.m. now. And, yeah, you would think that there would be a two- to three-month leeway for the switch. The fact there was only five days notice that CW programming would be moving to WUAB is a little fishy.

This is much worse than the Evansville situation where WTVW had to step in as WAZE's utter incompetence forced the CW to put the affiliation there ASAP.

At this point I see only one fate for WBNX; DTV America or CNZ buys it and turns it into the market's place for subchannels of last resort (like WIWN and WTSJ serve in Milwaukee) while burning off the syndication contracts for a year or two (WUAB just grabs a bunch of the better stuff and ditches their bottom feeder shows). They're the only ones who would pay whatever Angley wants for it; the other three would pay much less and likely use it for something more inane like giving the Justice Network full-market coverage.

Methinks WBNX is dunzo. The latest revelation that the buildings WBNX and the ministry have been foreclosed on means the end is near and CBS cut a deal with WUAB post haste.

...and WBNX could be easily absorbed into Tegna, Scripps or even FOX as a future WJW± station. It could even be a guinea pig for Sinclair, Cunningham or Armstrong Williams, or even Nexstar to create a WDVM-like station for Northeast Ohio (Akron and Canton sure could use a news station of their own!)

As for the land it sits on, it's across the street from Portage Crossing, a rebirth of the decrepit State Road Shopping Center. A mixed use venue would be another boon for the neighborhood and it's revival. If the owner of Rex Humbard's unfinished tower (known by another name by locals) gets sold too, it could possibly be finished into what it was supposed to be...

Didn’t you say leave WBNX’s fate for the speculatron?!

Any way WBNX gets bought by Fox (as someone said earlier) and becomes Fox 8 Plus with MNTV programming?

DTV America only buys low-power stations. WBNX is a full-power outlet, so I doubt if they would buy it.

True, but it's right up the CNZ wheelhouse; both have the same MO of packing a signal with 8 subchannels and collecting whatever comes in. But from now on out that's spec anyways.

If WBNX fails, it would be one of the most visible TV station failures of our time. Usually there's a buyer waiting in the wings.. in case that happens, they usually light up some form of (worthless) programming.

There's no record of foreclosure or a sherriff sale, but recent events paint a picture that the station (and ministry) defaulted on a loan took out 5 years ago.

And this is the picture of Angely that they went with, which seems fitting.

[spoiler=Don’t say I didn’t warn you...]ernest-angley-5b5826c8e22d6bc2.jpg

And he's 96. When will he just give it up by 1) retire and 2) sell WBNX-TV? That station is desperate for a new owner to get away from the deeply and severely troubled Angley ministries.
