Samantha 2873
So KSAZ has debuted a new set of opens. Their Promotion account includes the halftime teaser-promo videos they air during football each week... Sure, new supplemental open cut with the Just You Watch the Best five-note signature, no big deal this has been KSAZ's MO for all but 5 months in the last decade. But listen to Kristy Siefkin's weather tease... Aerial!? Are the O&Os finally going to put this dated, sucky OSI package to bed?
ColDayNews 437
It's actually the cut WBNS uses for mornings. I lived in Phoenix for a while in 2010-11 ... KSAZ was my station of choice. They didn't really use the OSI package a lot... except for breaking news and the 9pm open.

It gets supplemented a lot with their own custom stuff.
ChesapeakeTV 310
Oh my gosh. Yes. Please put the OSI package to pasture, Fox... WAGA is not using the music (or graphics) well, it isn't exactly the best package in general...I could go on, but that would be wasting time that could be spent getting something better on the playout system. TSSZNews 1046
There was some talk FTS was looking to Arnold to commission a new package a year or two back--don't think anything came of that though. As for KSAZ themselves--branding wise it's a hot mess; it's like they never left the early 2000s.

It retains more autonomy than the other Fox O&Os, and it shows. The fact that the Just You Watch the Best musical signature is still around (enough that you could dub this latest iteration "Fusion News IV") is startling. Somehow, it all works, though. I'd love if they could bring the Spirit of Arizona-era intros back somehow, though- because those are some BADASS intros- animal calls, awesome music, great graphics, authoritative VO, and the helicopter footage (the 10PM intro had it doing a powerslide, for God's sake!)- it really emphasized how Arizona's tough, and how KSAZ was getting tougher (especially considering they switched to Fox shortly after). The Spirit of Arizona package was incredible. That said, those opens would be way too long for KSAZ today, not to mention kitschy in a way that was kind of standard for Arizona TV when they were made. (The current open is 5 seconds long!) Jess 1110
I think what's kind of sad is that you can go back to quite a few Fox stations, and note that their pre-O&O look is more progressive and stylish now than anything they've done since. WNYW in particular looked really good pre-O&O, now they're just incredibly stale. ANY change at this point is good. The Fox stations arguably have the worst graphical look of any station group that has standardized.

The Spirit of Arizona was a product of the time, and the management. Then-GM Ron Bergamo once worked for Belo (known for their "Spirit of" campaigns) and helped create the "Look of a Leader" imaging at KWCH Wichita. It was a grand change, at a time when Great American/Citicasters was just exiting bankruptcy and ready to sell off KSAZ to New World. Bergamo tried to tie in the branding with a "FOX attitude" once they switched affiliations, but he soon left the station after the affiliation change and new management changed the branding to "FOX 10." Bergamo later introduced bold branding schemes at his later TV endeavors (a WB affiliate in Tucson, and KAZT in the Phoenix market) before his untimely passing. The Bergamo legacy lives on with KSAZ's yearly use of its original "Happy Holidays" song, introduced two months before the "Spirit of Arizona" branding, in 1993. Wow, so that thing dates to the KTSP days? Holy moly. You knew it couldn't come from Fox...
