You are right that in
, they swapped out the desk again for that big wooden one, and they updated the middle section with a fake newsroom backdrop that looked a lot like what NBC Nightly News had at the time. The rest of the set dated back to 1992. That configuration stuck around pretty much unchanged until 2004.

And then, Gannett took KUSA's 1997 desk and set and

in Sacramento, where it lived on pretty much as-is for another five years. FX Group
and built a new weather center for KXTV's HD launch in 2009, but the bones of the KUSA set were still there. 2015 brought the new social-media-forward newscasts into the renovated "information center," but who knows... that set might still be standing in the studio.

That particular set is still in use to this day at KXTV. Local informercial show Sac & Co. remodeled it last summer and broadcasts from it. The set’s been worked over many times by the station and has had a bazillion coats of paint & all kinds light fixtures attached to it by now. It truly is the set with nine lives that manages to avoid the dumpster.

If it isn't broke...

Not fully true. The backdrops date back to 1995. Everything else was redone at least once, parts were redone circa 2004 and everything else got redone when they went HD.

One big gimmie is the desk: The original desk on that set had lower sides (this when they had a lot of reporters doing their pieces in studio). Those sides later got moved up to be level and a whole new desk came in when they went HD.
