It looks like CityNews' relaunch outside Toronto will be outshot by CTV's announcement that it will expand its local news to 5:00 p.m. across all markets in Canada with the exception to Toronto.

In Toronto, CFTO will air CP24 LIVE at 5:00 and CP24 LIVE at 5:30 while continuing its CTV Toronto News at 6:00. In other words, CP24 the first hour, CTV Toronto the second and BOTH will air BOTH hours so CP24's LIVE at 5:00/5:30 will continue as well.

It will be the first simulcast of a local news channel in Toronto since the failed CityNews Channel in 2013 in which it simulcasted weekend mornings with Citytv Toronto.

Maybe this is speculation or not..but something to keep an eye on..The Al Jazeera network might be forced to shut down due to the diplomatic crisis currently going on here in Qatar as a concession.

http://money.cnn.com/2017/06/05/media/al-jazeera-qatar-saudi/index.html

So this has now been made official..as part of the demands that were made by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt.

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/06/al-jazeera-call-closure-siege-journalism-170623135809807.html

The list of demands includes all Al Jazeera affiliates plus other news organizations that might have direct or indirect funding from Qatar as : Arabi21, Rassd, Al Araby Al Jadeed, Mekameleen and Middle East Eye, etc

The full list of demands made by the four nations are here: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/06/arab-states-issue-list-demands-qatar-crisis-170623022133024.html and nothing has been stated about what the consequences will be if Qatar doesn't comply.

Up north...

The Toronto Star published a really insightful story on Peter Mansbridge, CBC's chief correspondent and anchor of their flagship news program "The National". It presents a look inside Mansbridge's life after his retirement and CBC's handling of the entire situation. Here's some points I've gathered:

- CBC News will have a major graphical and structural revamp this October,

"Managers are reverse-engineering every building block — number of stories, length of stories, format, tone, style, visuals, editorial stance, digital footprint, newsgathering flows — in a bid for transformation and, ultimately, relevance in an age of continuous news."

- Management and staff are still agonizing over the departure of Mansbridge. "Peter is a huge presence in the organization. And to have that gone, we’re really going to feel it. It’s going to be hard," echoed by a CBC Radio host.

- Mansbridge purposely did not attend internal meetings regarding the future of The National, probably to avoid influence. Furthermore, during these meetings "one anchor, multiple anchors and even no anchors" were considered as possible scenarios.

- The National has an average nightly audience of 525k viewers, compared to CTV's 1M. However, The National has an average of 760K streams, daily reach of 314K on Facebook.

- Mansbridge really does not like the Rogers/NHL deal considering the CBC doesn't earn any revenue from it. He also doesn't like the constant preempting of his nightly program due to the hockey telecasts. "There is no other network in the world that screws its flagship newscast like the CBC does to The National!"

- Broadcasting from the deck of a Coast Guard icebreaker and covering 44 straight hours of the 9/11 attacks are among Mansbridge's top 5 memories with the CBC.

It's a interesting read, take a look here.

He has 525M viewers nightly??? And CTV only has 1 million?

What's the problem....that's like a 900 share.

He has more viewers than the population of the USA, Canada, Botswana and Mexico combined.

I bet he can have any woman he wants.

He should show his boss those ratings and ask for a small raise before he retires.

525,000. Global National and CTV National News both out-rate The National. Numeris' Top 30 list for June 5-11 shows that The National didn't crack the top 30, but GNat and CTVNat did (you'll also see the aggregate numbers for the local CTV News at Six and Global News Hour newscasts).

http://assets.numeris.ca/Downloads/June%205,%202017%20-%20June%2011,%202017%20(National).pdf

In regards to sports bumping The National, it's no different from the American networks bumping their network newscasts for sports.

Also, I totally missed the fact Wendy Mesley and Peter Mansbridge were married to each other for a few years.

The lower atrium of the Canadian Broadcasting Centre (also the home of CBC Sports telecasts) was renamed to commemorate Peter Mansbridge.

You'll also get a nice good listen to the theme of The National playing the background.

History made.

Peter Mansbridge has finished anchoring his last news telecast with the CBC. His official final broadcast will be tomorrow afternoon during the daytime Canada Day broadcast.

"So, that's The National for this Friday night. For CBC News, I'm Peter Mansbridge. Thanks for watching. Thanks for watching all of these years. It's been a quite the ride for me, but always a privilege to be a part of bringing the national story home to you from wherever that story may be. I can only hope you found it worthwhile too. Goodbye, and good night, from Ottawa."

Here's another interview of Mansbridge, from CBC's Heather Hiscox.

That's a decent studio. I'm amazed that they were doing it with the studio garage door open (as seen in the last pic). Seems like it could be a dangerous prospect during a live newscast.

I guess there's a different vibe. The studio is located at Sugar Beach, practically at the waterfront... so it's relatively calm if anything. I would assume the people there are already intimated by the large studio lights and equipment and naturally they would stay away. Furthermore, Citytv back in the ChumCity era operated newscasts and other events with open windows facing the busy downtown area of Queen and John... with minimal disruption.

.

An update to that thread by the way, Global Toronto's newscasts returned to the Don Mills headquarters the following week. There were no changes.

Legendary Argentinian anchor Santo Biasatti did his final newscast on Canal 13 yesterday.

He resigned after refusing to be reassigned to do special reports. Mr. Biasatti is 74 years old and worked at Canal 13 from 1990 until 2017 as anchor and reporter.

This is his brief farewell message:

He didn't want to cry on air, so he left the studio immediately after that message (and never came back), and his co-anchor María Laura Santillán continued the newscast alone until 9:30pm, the usual end time.

He's one of the best in the business and a very good JOURNALIST! Hope he'll be back in another channel soon!

Two things I learned today...

One: Bloomberg TV Canada shut down back in October 2017 and was quickly replaced by Bloomberg Television in the states.

Two: BNN is expected to rebrand as "BNN Bloomberg," creating a new partnership between Bell Media and Bloomberg and overtaking the previous one from Channel Zero. Also, Bell Media will have the rights to Bloomberg Radio through iHeartRadio Canada.

The first incarnation was operated by Channel Zero.

Original programming consisted of an hour-long show at 4pm ET, first titled The Daily Brief and later Bloomberg Markets: Canada, hourly updates during the business day and a nightly show produced 3-5 times a week called Bloomberg North.

The rest of the day consisted or simulcast programming of the US service and it maintained the same on-screen data heavy format.

Channel Zero pulled the plug in Sept. 2017, claiming they couldn't start a radio version of the operation in Toronto. To their credit, they did try and apply for one of the few remaining FM licenses in 2012 to no avail.

I didn't hear of Channel Zero stiffing them on their severance pay (look up CHCH-TV if you haven't already).

Rosemary Barton can't do Power and Politics anymore on CBC-NN because she's now doing The National on CBC Television.

So let's meet Vassy Kapelos. She worked for CITV Edmonton and CFSK Saskatoon. She used to work for Global National's Ottawa bureau chief and was the host of The West Block.

Keywords... USED TO and WAS.

Vassy starts hosting Power and Politics in March: http://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/kapelos-p-and-p-1.4537311

She did stellar work as Global's provincial politics reporter for CITV and CICT Calgary (based out of Edmonton), and did great work for Global National and The West Block. On top of the layoffs announced across Global News yesterday, this one IMO is a blow to the news organization.

This is not television but still relevant to the International scene nonetheless and this caught me off guard while looking up CBC stuff on Wikipedia.

Apparently, CBC Radio 2 has now become CBC Music.

The Australian version of C-SPAN is no longer A-PAC. Its now Sky News Extra.

This comes as Sky News Australia launches three online streams for members only, allow Sky News Australia to be streamed live online in audio format and introduce Sky News UK to Foxtel viewers.

In short on Foxtel...

Channel 600 = Sky News Australia

Channel 601 = Sky News Business

Channel 602 = FOX Sports News

Channel 603 = Sky News Weather

Channel 604 = Sky News Extra

Channel 605 = Sky News UK

I really liked the BBC rebrand in 2008, but ever since then, their entire look feels really stale and uninspired. They should have gone for a more radical evolution of that look when they moved to New Broadcasting House in 2013.
