Dick Goddard Retirement Announcement

Dick Goddard has essentially been in an emeritus role since 2007 with Andre Bernier handling most of the chief duties. Dick's appearances have been limited to the 6pm news and filling in when Andre and others are on vacation.

Melissa will more than likely stay on at 4 and 7pm newscasts. Andre will be on 5, 6, and 10:00pm

And to think, Dick was days away from heading west to Los Angeles to become an animator for Disney when KYW hired him.

The reason why he joined WJW-TV after KYW's management and call letters moved back to Philadelphia**? WJW-TV carried Browns games through CBS's NFL contract, and the Browns hired him as their statistician, a position he held until a few years ago.

**Dick went to Philadelphia for a few weeks; Wally "The Weatherman" Kinnan took his place at the renamed WKYC.

Now before you all go pushing Dick out...

Remember what happened to Morley.

Live Dick Live!

I'm just thankful that his career isn't ending like Dorothy Fuldheim's. (The lifelong WEWS staffer had a career-ending stroke at her desk mere minutes after interviewing President Reagan in 1984. She was 91.)

A few days back, Bob Dyer of the Akron Beacon Journal profiled the "other" side of Dick Goddard that few viewers ever saw or heard about.

I remember his extended absence in the fall of 1996 because of losing his longtime companion and his mother. It was RIGHT after the station underwent the massive overhaul from "ei8ht is news" into FOX 8. Mark Koontz covered for him and rumors were flying that he would take over for Dick....but that never happened and Koontz was gone by 2000.

And in other Dick Goddard related news, HB 60 or "Goddard's Law" has passed the Ohio Senate and just needs Gov. John Kasich's signature to become law. Named after Dick Goddard, it would make it a fifth-degree felony to knowingly cause serious physical harm to a companion animal. He has been a lifelong animal rights activist who promises to fully devote himself to the "four-foots" when he steps away from weather forecasting this fall.
