No numbers from here in the Greenville/Spartanburg market, but WYFF has rolled out a press release saying that they're #1.

http://www.wyff4.com/news/wyff-4-dominates-local-news-ratings/36653306

Since the market includes Asheville, too, it's likely that WLOS is ahead of WYFF and WSPA up there since they're more North Carolina-centric in their coverage.

WBTV in Charlotte has been running commercials saying they're #1 in the morning. This is the first time that I can remember that WSOC wasn't at the top of the pack. WCCB also beat WAXN in the 25-54 demographic back in September. Mark Washburn hasn't written his article with the numbers yet, but it looks like there are growing pains with all the staff changes at WSOC.

The only ratings numbers that I can get from South Florida (since neither The Miami Herald nor The Sun-Sentinel likes to report on these kinds of TV news stories) is that a promo from WSVN says that they are #1 in Morning News, #1 in Early News and #1 in Late News.

In other words, WSVN is #1 in A25-54 from 5:00-10:00am, 6:00-7:00pm and 10:00-11:30pm. (I had to read the bottom fine print during the promo to make sure because I'm not stupid and I like to read ratings numbers.)

The nice thing about the Nielsens is you can skew them in a million ways so even the public access station can claim to be #1.

You have to have the whole book to "accurately" rate anything.

Or you need a kick-ass sale team capable of lying their asses off and always claiming to be #1 ratings be dammed!

Summary:

  • WCVB's lead is slipping to WHDH in A25-54.
  • WFXT can only win at 10:00pm, since Cox ruined WFXT in every other timeslot.
  • WBZ is not what it used to be, almost dead last in every newscast except early evening.
  • WHDH is almost the king.

But this is only A25-54. If you want to look at P2+ and Total HH (which is the one I care about), then go here... http://www.newenglandone.com/news/local-news/item/1272-november-ratings-results-for-boston.html

The very competitive Pittsburgh Market, and both KDKA & WPXI had new sets, so I guess it wasn't in WPXI favor so to speak.

?format=500w

My summary on this:

  • This market ain't competitive anymore because KDKA is the ratings winner, time after time after time again.
  • WTAE always wins mornings (4:30-7:00am).
  • KDKA always wins middays (12:00-1:00pm) and evenings (4:00-7:00pm).
  • WPXI's only win is not even on their main station, instead its on WPGH.

Man is WPXI really far off from even trying to be competitive against KDKA, at least ratings-wise.

That's true, but WSOC has been #1 both overall and in the money demos during the entire morning and evening blocks for over a quarter century. They've also been #1 overall and in the demos at 10pm on WAXN since WCCB lost the Fox affiliation. The only time periods that have been competitive are noon and 11pm, and WBTV is the only station that's come close. It's big news when a dominant #1 is overtaken.

WSOC is not the only Cox station who's ratings have slipped as of late. In Atlanta for example, WAGA has overtaken WSB in some time slots. You can tell WSOC has tried to "soften their image" lately, which I think is the wrong strategy. There has been more chatter between the anchors, more lighter and "feel good" stories, marketing that doesn't match their product, a slower pace, staff changes, anchors asking staged questions for impact and an overall quality decline.

My whole thing is, stick with what has worked. I don't see the point in a lot of the changes they've made lately. Just cut the crap and report the news. Don't waste my time with nonsense.

Yes, you say that but when a stations ratings start to noise dive management & executives panic! WAGA's 10PM beats WSB's 11pm in Demos, and this is not the first time. WSB has always stayed with their Cox formula if it not broke why fix it. Now WSB like well let get a new set (pls I hope it not like WPXI) Their new set has to outshine WAGA, because WSB has to always win. Remember they have a sign in their newsroom that said" #1 News Team in America".

#2 (WTLV) Today = 3.2 HH / 9% share

#3 (WJAX) CBS This Morning = 2.0 HH / 6% share

#4 (WJXX) Good Morning America = 1.9 HH / 6% share

No data mentioned for WFOX's Action News Jax This Morning on FOX 30 (but its probably way behind WJXT from 7-9am)

12:00-12:30pm

No data mentioned for any station.

5:00-5:30pm

#1 (WJXT) News 4 Jax at 5:00 = 6.4 HH / 13% share

6:30-7:00pm

No ABC/CBS/NBC primetime programming data. (but it mentions that WJXT beats network primetime programming.)

#2 (WJAX) Action News Jax at 11:00 on CBS 47 = 4.4 HH / 9% share

#3 (WTLV/WJXX) First Coast News at 11:00 = 4.3 HH / 9% share

Few notes to mention...

  • Action News Jax starts at 4:30am on WFOX FOX 30, but is not simulcast on WJAX CBS 47 until 5:00am.
  • The same can be said for First Coast News as WTLV airs the 4:30am news while WJXX starts at 5:00am.
  • WJXT is home to the area's ONLY 9:00am and 6:30pm news.

Summary...

WJXT is #1, WTLV/WJXX is #2 and WJAX/WFOX is #3. Always been like that as this market is never competitive because once again, you don't need a network affiliation to win in the local news ratings. WJXT keeps proving that once again and that's why they use the slogan THE Local Station for a reason. If anything, WJAX did manage to surpass WTLV/WJXX at 5:00 and 11:00pm with the closest race in the market coming weeknights at 11:00pm.

Wow. The good weather CRUSHED the Pittsburgh stations. Poor Channel 11. They had a bad month. They usually do pretty good during months of crappy weather because they always have a lot of weather coverage.

I don't think there's anything wrong with always winning or always wanting to win. I'm a fan of Cox. They run their stations the right way. Their declines recently, however, are self inflicted. I think you're right, they did panic a little over a year ago when WAGA started making gains. They've been experimenting, and even stopped reporting the ratings in their newspaper, the Atlanta Journal Constitution. I'm confident they'll figure it out before too long, though.
