How does one get into doing news voiceovers?

What is the path, especially in this day and age, to become a news voiceover guy (and more broadly commercial voice work)? I know about college radio, but is actually working as a disc jockey the only way to get experience. Many legendary narrators to me (Charlie Van Dyke, Ray Otis, Eric Gordon, Mark Elliot) seem to have got their head in the game by doing just that. I can be a shy personality sometimes. And my voice, while it can be optimized, lacks basic skills. It seems like when I record myself, no matter how I try I can't get that smooth sounding voice. Can it just be a matter of diet and exercise?

Oh, I'm not thinking this is truly the thing I want to do, at least not professionally, but just curious. Are there any who even post here?
