May 2015 Sweeps Results

ABC 7's doing far better in the mornings than I expected. They've rebounded nicely over the last year, and the anchor change doesn't seem to have hurt them.

No but that article you linked does say they are in second 530am and after in everything. How bad did you expect them to do? You didn't expect 5 to beat them too I hope?

Who knows if the Houston Chronicle will get around to publishing the results; but according to media blogger Mike Mcguff (mikemcguff.blogspot.com) KRIV, KPRC, KTMD & KXLN all had something to brag about.

KRIV was apparently tops in the 25-54 demos for the entire morning news block. They werealso #2 behind KTRK at 5pm.

KPRC topped the English language stations at 10pm in the 25-54 demo.

Among all stations, KXLN was tops 18-49 at 5pm and both 18-49 & 25-54 at 10. KTMD was 2nd among 18-49 At 10.

Here's a more in-depth look at all ratings in Chicago. WLS, WMAQ, WGN, and Telemundo station WSNS all claim victories. The others are all burning in viewership hell...

http://chicagoradioandmedia.com/news/7422-abc-7-wins-may-sweeps-for-evening-newscasts-nbc-5-wgn-also-winners

I'm not even going to attempt to rewrite it all down.

Can't believe that CBS and FOX continue to let their respective O&O's in Chicago suffer through such misery. What WBBM really needs is a full reboot: shake up the format of their news programs, get a new studio, make some talent changes, etc. As for WFLD, I honestly think it might be time for FOX to either sell it off, or switch it to all syndicated programs during the day. Their news department has become hopelessly irrelevant, despite efforts to freshen it up.

Meanwhile, it's good to see WMAQ and WGN trying to give WLS a run for their money. Competition is good.

They were duking it out for #2 for several months, each taking a turn in third, so anything's possible.

WLS' #2 position at 11am should be reason for them to celebrate, too. WCL beating news on both 2 and 5 is something I didn't expect, but I suppose that the news audience has been fractured some since WMAQ moved to the hour.

WLNE would be better off being bought by Hearst and turned into a semi-satellite of WCVB then to be in the misery it is experiencing now.

WLNE's misery goes all the way back to its founding. It was a latecomer to the Providence area since a UHF station tried and failed to serve the area before. Then, the channel 6 allocation was forced to serve the Massachusetts side of the market (in New Bedford) while being shortspaced to stations in Portland, ME, Schenectady, NY and even Philadelphia's WFIL/WPVI. This caused it to be separated from WJAR and WPRI with weaker reception in Providence itself being in the opposite direction from these two stations. Even today Bristol County, MA viewers are stuck with Providence stations on the dial when their "own" station is focused on Providence as well instead of getting news from Boston, with then WTEV having packed up from New Bedford years ago.

The "hot potato" of ownership didn't help either as Pulitzer sold the station to Freedom (to get WFBC/WYFF); Freedom selling out to Global several years before cashing out to Sinclair; Global filing for receivership, and the fire sale to dark horse bidder Citadel. Given this history and obstacles the station has faced, it's highly unlikely a major bidder would ever consider owning this station, especially those mentioned who either own, have owned, or are maxed out ownership wise. If Citadel ever sells, it's either going to be a small or local owner, or someone who will put this station out of its misery once and for all.

In Denver, 9 News on KUSA is STILL number one in Colorado. Poor KMGH...they gotta do something and fast.

http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_28166319/denver-tvs-may-sweeps-ratings-reveal-highly-competitive

Meanwhile in Central Florida, WFTV still dominates and WOFL is number one at 10pm.

In New York, WABC remains the top-rated station in every competitive timeslot http://7online.com/news/wabc-tv-is-most-watched-station-in-the-new-york-area-nation/734845/

Their use of "most watched station in the country" is kind of spin.. They have the most potential audience by a large margin so it's not hard to be most watched. A 3.5 / 9 share sign-on to sign-off isn't really that impressive. There are lots of other stations in the country that do better than that... some by quite a bit.

True but they also don't use that as a brand... it's never mentioned on-air or anything... So it's kind of just thrown into the sweeps PR releases and that's all we see of it

In KC, KMBC has regained its top spot. From the numbers below, you can also see how much The NOW has negatively affected KSHB. However, they're doing something right that's allowed them to come in 2nd at 10pm (even if only by a tenth of a point) and increase their lead in more than any other station. WDAF narrowly lost mornings, something that has to be quite annoying for them. They recovered well in the second half of sweeps though. First half didn't appear to be going to well.

Has KSHB done anything to strengthen The NOW yet?

I don't know about anything specific, but they surely have had to in attempts to not be last. Before The NOW, they were second and occasionally first at 4pm. Now they're 4th, and if you were to look at ratings from the other, non-news stations, I'm sure they would actually be 5th or lower sometimes. Plus, if The NOW had any chance of succeeding in the market, then we probably wouldn't have heard rumors about the show going on hiatus.

I think that NBC, CBS, and Fox have invested in their respective O&Os in the metroplex to where they give WFAA a run for its money, especially Fox 4 and NBC 5.

Btw, Uncle Barky should start calling Gannett8 "Tegna8".

I haven't seen anything here in Baltimore yet. Would it be in poor taste to announce a ratings win that most likely be inflated by the stations Freddie Gray and subsequent riot coverage?
