Fox, Tribune, Univision, and Ion expected to sell spectrum

As opposed to the fear-mongering on, say, a certain cable "news" channel not owned by Rupert Murdock or Time-Warner...

Besides, it's the all-infomercial channels that provide little benefit to the viewing public. Those should go first, long before the religious stations.

Thank goodness Paxson-turned-ION abandoned this route, same with USA Broadcasting unloading their stations to Univision a decade back. Home shopping is about as worthless on broadcast television as the religious garbage.

Hispanic television is a major draw, and despite Univision's limited national reach, is starting to outrank the CW on a regular basis (and other networks when programming slows down!)

Where Hispanic television outdraws English programming (dropping their programming to duopoly-bait status in places like Miami), it's anyone's guess if the companies are willing to sell off some spectrum and consolidate their efforts on what remains...but market size and proximity to other major markets is what makes the spectrum valuable since it could theoretically be used regardless of what market it came from if not for TV....

...and on the flipside, in other markets like Cleveland where the Hispanic population is less, Univision could be selling there....

Do you think CBS will keep KCAL? KCAL appears to be loved more than WLNY.

CBS only bought WLNY for its must-carry status on NY cable systems.

Believe it or not, WLNY is also officially not recognized as a part of CBS's New York City radio/TV cluster because of the Riverside COL. CBS actually told that to the FCC when they requested a waiver to buy the 101.9 frequency back in 2012 as the FM home for WFAN (not filing the waiver would have put CBS over the ownership cap in New York City).

If Fox unloads WWOR, those New Jersey politicians are going to be calling for Rupert's head.

And none of them have anywhere near the clout that Senator Frank Lautenberg had, let alone Senator Bill Bradley (who RKO petitioned to move WOR-TV's COL to Seacaucus in the first place).

It shouldn't be a shock to anyone that Fox canned the remaining newscasts on WWOR a year after Sen. Lautenberg died.

Here's my question, how would participating stations that end up sharing a channel following the auction be able to adequately multicast separate SD and HD feeds? I've heard about the channel sharing trial between KXLA and KLCS (which each carry quite a bit of subchannels, KXLA moreso), but I never really looked at the results of that trial.

I'd like to try and answer your question. But, I'm not totally sure I understand what your asking with your question. Would you be willing to elaborate a little further.

I'm sure Philip Lombardo/Citadel Communications LLC would likely cash out on WSNN LD virtual 39 on RF Channel 39 in Sarasota, Florida as part of Tampa/Saint Petersburg, Florida TV DMA and WLNE virtual 6 on RF Channel 49 in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Citadel could maybe make a deal with Sinclair Broadcasting Group to run WLNE's programming including ABC on the DT2 of Sinclair's recently acquired WJAR with WJAR continuing to air their programming with NBC in 1080 HDTV on 10.1 and be able to carry WLNE's programming with ABC in 720 HDTV on 10.2 with WJAR airing ME-TV being moved over to a WJAR 10.3 digital multicast subcarrier in 480 SDTV.

Citadel likely would keep Lincoln's ABC station KLKN virtual 8 on RF Channel 8 in Lincoln, Nebraska in the future, but have concerns over about the other ABC station out of Kearney, Nebraska within the entire Lincoln-Grand Island-Hastings-Kearney TV DMA that also serves the North Platte TV DMA which is NTV as KWNB in Hayes Center and KHGI in Kearney as known as the Nebraska Television Network with KWNB transmitting digitally on RF Channel 6 and KHGI transmitting digitally on RF Channel 13. KFXL has started broadcasting digitally on RF Channel 15 moving down from RF Channel 51 and maps to virtual channel 51.

NTV has been in receivership since March 2012 with Lee W Shubert as receivership trustee than David Stapleton took over in October 2013. NTV/KFXL has been part of the Pappas Liquidating Trust and receivership due to Harry Pappas failing to make payments to Comerica Bank to reinvest in his assets.

NTV/KFXL has been embroiled in the Harry Pappas/Pappas Telecasting bankruptcy and receivership turmoil saga since Pappas bankruptcy filing in May 2008 with NTV/KFXL not being included in the bankruptcy filing but eventually into receivership.

It the 2nd time that NTV went into receivership in the overall history of NTV through the years since it's sign on Christmas Eve December 24, 1953. The 1st time NTV went into receivership is when the sale of NTV consisted of KHGI, KWNB, KSNB from Gordon to Sterling fell through with Joseph Amaturo as the receivership trustee in 1989 and Joseph Girard became the successor trustee in 1991 and NTV finally went out of receivership by selling NTV to Fant in 1993. This happened years after Amaturo split the then KCNA into KBGT as an independent station BC-1983-10-17-OCR-Page-0072.pdf in 1983, then Amaturo sold NTV to Gordon in 1985, and sold off KBGT to present day ownership-parentship Philip Lombardo/Citadel Communications http://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1583/m1/239/ in 1986 to turn into a satellite of KCAU as KCAN in 1987 when continuing to serve the Columbus, Genoa, and Albion areas before moving into the Lincoln as the present day KLKN in 1996.

It could be possible for Lombardo/Citadel to acquire NTV/KFXL as a whole with Tom Wheeler's FCC possibly giving Lombardo/Citadel be granted leeway to be allowed to acquire NTV/KFXL as a whole and continuing to run KLKN. Citadel could acquire NTV/KFXL under a failed station waiver due to the difficulties Pappas receivership trustee Shubert and Stapleton has been in finding a very reasonable buyer for NTV/KFXL and under a satellite station waiver for KLKN to run KHGI and KWNB as satellites of KLKN for KLKN's programming and KHGI to continue to operate KWNB as a satellite of KHGI and to run KLKN as a satellite of KHGI to streamline the overall operations of KLKN, KFXL, KHGI, and KWNB completely as NTV/KFXL completely been stuck being engulfed in the overall bankruptcy and receivership saga of the Pappas organization.

If Citadel ever bought NTV/KFXL, Citadel might stay in business for a few more years with or without WLNE but with KLKN and NTV/KFXL and possibly sell off KLKN and NTV/KFXL together to either Nexstar or Sinclair.

Pappas likely never gets along with Lombardo and Perry Sook but more likely gets along with David Smith and Brian W Brady that Pappas would rather prefer to possibly handpicked to sell NTV to David Smith's Sinclair Broadcast Group, Brian W Brady's Northwest Broadcasting, or even Max Media as the potential owner-parent of NTV mainly to make sure that NTV remains an independent ABC affiliate for the Grand Island-Hastings-Kearney area independent of KLKN under Philip Lombardo/Citadel Communications LLC control for the Lincoln area and maybe would rather let NTV/KFXL go off the air and go dark very permanently if Pappas isn't satisfied with the buyers who would be very interested in acquiring the hybrid ABC/FOX NTV by letting NTV and KFXL go off the air and go dark very permanently on January 1, 2017 is when the Pappas Liquidating Trust expires on December 31, 2016 at 11:59:50 PM heading into January 1, 2017 at 12:00:00 AM is due to the possibly of Pappas unwilling to sell NTV/KFXL to a very reasonable buyer is when the trust liquidating expires and when the spectrum auction, channel sharing, and channel repacking begins with Pappas possibly taking KWNB dark and returning it's license back to the FCC, and selling KHGI and KFXL spectrum to the FCC in the spectrum auction by turning NTV and KFXL FOX Nebraska into a cable and satellite only station in the future by being only available for longtime loyal NTV viewers with cable and satellite by 2020.

It is difficult for Pappas to continue to keep running KFXL's over the air signal in Lincoln since Pappas has to compete with the now Sinclair operated KPTM which Pappas founded years ago for both over the air and cable viewership for FOX programming overall.

I would like to see Univision to sell KUTH and WQHS. These stations' market are too small to operate Spanish O&O. Besides, these market didn't have English O&O.

KUTH is workable; it's DMA 34 and Hispanic DMA 32. Cleveland, on the other hand, is 19/54.

One possible sale I see is in Bakersfield (127/30); they own full power KUVI (MyTV), Class A KABE (Univision) and two Class As airing UniMás (one of which is still in analog). Bakersfield's median estimates are 31 for full-powers and 15 for Class As — decently boosted by its proximity to Los Angeles.

KUVI carries the Univision and UniMás outlets as digital subchannels.
