Breakfast Television cancelled on Citytv Winnipeg

Winnipeg's first local TV morning show has been cancelled, replaced by a radio simulcast from one of its parent company's radio stations in the city.

Also keep in mind that Global TV and CTV have entered the local morning show race in the last couple of years. This is probably an overall barometer of the state of local television, but maybe also how poorly BT was performing compared to CTV Morning Live Winnipeg and Global Winnipeg Morning News. Both CTV and Global have the backing of relatively larger news operations both on the local and national levels, and Global has a news helicopter in Winnipeg that's in the air every morning.

If Sportsnet can use simulcasts of radio shows from its sister radio stations as filler too, I don't see why not.

But like you said: City doesn't really have much of a "national" news department like the other major Canadian networks. Toronto is pretty much the only place where they have a solid operation at all.

It just seems like a step back for Citytv, and for local television in general. They won't be going out shooting local news with this new arrangement for BT, they will only do in-studio TV interviews.

It's a bit different with Sportsnet, unless there is a game or press conference going on, there's not much to cover in sports - so sports chatter seems to be appropriate filler in between live sports broadcasts. And with CBC, they aren't competing in the mornings with local news at the moment, and their radio morning shows gather news. So it's a step up for them.
