Scripps - General Discussion

ns8401
Message added by Weeters,

Thread Note: Since Scripps has indicated they intend to run ION Media as a separate entity from their existing (mostly) news-producing stations, ION discussion has been relocated to a new thread.

Recommended Posts

The traffic ticker at both stations in question is generated by Newsroom Solutions hardware and fetches data from various sources on the web, either public data or from a subscription service. The station can't fix it themselves afaik, they have to get Newsroom Solutions to fix it.

I guess it's easier to run bogus info then to ask "newsroom solutions" to fix the problem.

How many other markets are repeating the same bad info across the country?

The Now...San Diego.

It's completely unwatchable for me.

Reminds me of ping pong balls on crack. Missed cues, tech glitches everywhere, and very confused and flustered reporters.

We are supposed to be "inviting these people into our homes"???

Well get me a tranqulizer gun for Ann State so I can shoot a tranq into that booty.

I stopped watching last week. Terrible show. Ariel looks like he's about to fall asleep at any moment, and Anne seems lost. Angelica looks like she doesn't want to be there. Have you noticed that they're doing more walking around the set/ standing up during the other newscasts? This new ND is really sinking their product even more.

I swear the only place they have not tried as a stand up spot is the restrooms and cafeteria. At any second I expect Anne to wander out on to highway 94 only to be run over by the braking news crapper. I actually found myself watching Miss Piggy and the 4pm NBC7 offering just so I could "come down".

KGTV needs to spend the money for a Steadicam Jr, and a real trained operator like KSWB did.

The 4pm offerings in this market are pitiful. KGTV's product blows, KNSD is stale, XETV...Who? and KSWB, meh. Makes me miss the old days of News 8/Local 8 News at 4pm. At least Beth Shelburne and Kathleen Bade made me stick around.

Who's Miss Piggy? Monica Dean?

So which you'd prefer, San Diego 6 News at 4:00, The NOW San Diego, NBC 7 News at 4:00 or FOX 5 News at 4:00? It sounds like you like KNSD's 4pm news more.

Eventually, KFMB may go back and KUSI will join everybody at some point.

KFMB going back...not likely unless they cancel Judge Judy and even then, it's a big if. KUSI, maybe but not in the near future. I usually tune into to NBC 7 by default because the other choices are atrocious.

Current....

But I digress. if it was "former: the list could be endless lol.

Hmmm, let's see... There's:

Whitney Southwick

Mark Mathis

Craig Herrera

Greg Bledsoe

Matt Baylow

Shawn Styles

Dave Scott

Brad Wills

I want to say Dave Scott? And if I may ask, why "chaps?"

Because except for those chaps he was buck naked.

Palm Springs is not FAR enough from SD to NOT be noticed.

That is a scary vision...if it was Dave he would have claimed it was accidental and part of the Worlds of Wonder.

I'm afraid to ask...

Back to Scripps: Is there some kind of mandate that requires talent to plug Jimmy Kimmel's show? I ask because I've seen no less than 4 posts by different anchors and reporters at KGTV plugging JK on Twitter.

I just fast forwarded through last nights show and saw no references at the end of each block nor at the end of the show.

I did see that they have a new sports program airing at 11:30 Sunday Mornings called "The Nest with (Ravens Kicker) Justin Tucker". The show goes up against an hour of Ravens Produced programming on WBFF with "Ravens Unscripted" and "Ravens Wired". The Ravens programming seems kind of odd because first Justin Tucker does promos for WBAL's APP & Newscasts and then the programming on WBFF seems to go against WBAL's claim of being the "Official Broadcast Home of the Baltimore Ravens". Those programs that air on WBFF are also carried on Comcast Sports Net and in the past on WBAL +.

It can't be any worse than clicking a link about a now retired news anchor who now does porn's personal tumblr.

The only relation I know of here in Detroit is the plug at the end of the newscast with pre recorded Kimmel tease that the anchors toss to and he says "thanks (anchor names)"...

Doing a plug on Twitter might be a local level decision...

Yeah, they do the plug during the 11pm newscast here as well. I just found it odd that they would have to constantly need to plug JK's show and retweet it several times on the main KGTV twitter.

There is some form of compensation for the plugs. There can be givebacks of time, special access, promos and visits. These little things are part of affiliate agreements as various "riders". As an affiliate you want little cool stuff...and the net wants your local promo tie-in.

Everyone is supposed to be one big happy tv family. You want to push the viewer into the next hour anyway and it belongs to the network.

Besides, if your station plays ball with the network, you might get Rosie from The View to fly out and stand next to your anchors in the May promo's. She may even do a little dance with them.

I get the need to plug the show, but it's excessive. Then again, everything KGTV has been doing recently is excessive...

The long-gone Rosie. They'll send Raven-Symone instead.

Running at least 5 morning show promos each commercial break...sigh...

Seems like they also love doing the new "weather center computer" shot during the 7 pm news. Wouldn't be surprised when they start doing shots with the studio door as a backdrop.

oh yes, those... annoying as hell. They do love using that standup area with the monitors on the right side and the big gap between the color changing panels of the set. So what do they do to cover that gap up? They put a black curtain and shine a light that reflects the ABC 10 logo.

They are going to milk every cent out of that set. I wonder why they have never really expanded that place beyond what expanded 25 years ago.

You could easily take it to 2 or 3 stories and have killer views and bad-ass outdoor sets.

I really liked the set when it first debuted, but i've come to dislike over the last few years. There is nothing that stands out (in a good way)...it's just bland all the way around.

As for their building, they did re-do the newsroom and made it larger a few years ago, but I agree, they have a lot of space to expand. Why they never did it, baffles me. Hey, if Scripps ever wants to have a second home-base/West Coast flagship, then there is no better place than San Diego. Maybe a nice skyscraper Downtown with some signature elements that people would immediately recognize as the "Scripps" building. They already have the name recognition in the market...

As for their property: It's a good sized lot, maybe they can get Coca-Cola to buy it if they ever decide to sell it...
