Sinclair Broadcast Group - General Discussion

I'm wondering if they would be able to treat KJZZ as a satelite of KMYU since the coverage areas of both signals don't overlap each other at all. Right now KMYU's programming is on a subchannel of KUTV in the Wasatch Front.

It's already a technical satellite of KUTV since it carries a KUTV rebroadcast mapped to 2.1, so either way with KUTV or KJZZ they'd have no issue with that at all.

New M&A regarding Sinclair tonight.

They're acquiring KJZZ from Larry H. Miller Communications for $6.5M. It'll become a sister to KUTV.

Dear Sinclair,

If you are going to submit a multiple ownership exhibit with an application you may want to proof-read it first. Or, hire a better consultant. HINT: WJLP is no longer located in the market. That station "moved" some 2,000+ miles to the east TWO years ago. So, you might be stretching it a bit including it as a voice in the SLC market.

Thanks.

For what it's worth the voices chart submitted would still contain the same number of voices as KUTF / Daystar was left off. I just get a chuckle that they forgot the station that is the impediment to them mapping the KMYU simulcast on KUTV to 12.1 and added a NYC station in it's place.

And so too will this end the LMA between KJZZ and Bonneville/KSL?

I think it's safe to say that it will be terminated once the deal closes.

The question is.....how does KMYU factor into this? It's almost like a repeater since it serves a separate geographic area and the program streams are identical, aside from the PSIP assignments KUTV is 2.1 on both channels, whereas KMYU is 2.2 on KUTV and 12.1 on KMYU itself.

Armstrong Williams will probably swoop in and acquire it and shift the channels to run some diginet on 12.1....

The FCC has held the position for quite some time that stations in a single DMA may be commonly owned, without the need for a waiver (satellite or failing station), if their Grade B contours do not overlap

From the application: "KMYU(TV) is licensed to St. George, Utah, located in the southwestern corner of Utah, more than 250 miles from Salt Lake City in north-central Utah, home to KUTV(TV) and KJZZ TV. Neither the prior analog Grade B contours nor, as shown in Exhibit 1 hereto, the current digital noise limited contours, of KMYU(TV) overlap the contours of either KUTV(TV) or KJZZ-TV. Because of the lack of signal overlap, the stations can be owned in combination in compliance with the local television ownership rules without the need for a satellite exemption."

So, they are fine to own all three stations.

KRXI seem to have removed their live feed of their station on their website. before you could actually watch shows off it but now its only up for news. i remember you could do this with WNYW.

A couple hundred possible copyright issues may have had something to do with that.

WFXL has pared down its news lineup again. The station has cancelled the weekend editions of its 10:00 p.m. newscast, just four months after cancelling its morning newscast FOX 31 News: Good Day. As pointed out by Roly (WSVNFan) on his blog, since 2011, WFXL has gone from producing three newscasts (totaling 28.5 hours a week) to now only producing one (totaling five hours a week), starting with the cancellation of its 6:30 p.m. newscast. Ironic as some of its news-producing Fox-affiliated sisters (such as WBFF, KOKH, WZTV and WLUK) have begun to bulk up on news in the past two years.

Case of Sinclair being cheap again?

It's a case of a station that cannot sell airtime. It can be a crappy GM or GSM....a bad news product...or the competition took all the good advertisers.

There just may just not be enough business to survive in that markert.

(like the sad story of KYES)

All the political races in that market may be dogs also.

Now add...

Sinclair being cheap.

This is Albany, GA....and a former Barrington station. Not helping matters is the 800 pound gorilla WALB with both NBC and ABC; as well as WCTV's semi-satellite WSWG as competition.

I'm not even sure they're 16x9. Just up the road in Macon is WGXA which we all know is pumping out beautiful 4x3 SD!

and you had to post from a dial-up account on a 33.6 modem.

Ouchy!

WFXL is 16:9 SD, done under barrington

And I don't know what's going on in terms of talent at WFXL's 10:00pm news because this picture says it all, even though they are still working at WGXA in Macon as the main evening team at 5:00pm (WGXA)/6:00pm (WGXA 16.2)/10:00pm (WGXA)/11:00pm (WGXA 16.2):

Before WALB added ABC on thieir .2, I think WSB was piped in as their default ABC afflilate. Before WSWG became a semi-satellite, it was a failed ABC station that returned as a WB/UPN affiliate.

WFXL was originally a Waitt/Raycom station, but had to be divested when Liberty merged with Raycom. And, WALB was Gray's flagship, and had to be sold Liberty when WCTV was bought because of their city-grade signal contours overlapping, which was a no-no at the time.

Even though WSWG pipes in WCTV's newscasts...you would think that WFXL would at least have a fighting chance. But down the road, you have WTWC, the southern equivalent of KDNL, our favorite non-news producing Sinclair station of all time. What caused WTWC to be such a failure over the years? WALB's signal reaching Tallahassee and it being until 1983 that Tallahassee got a NBC station of their own through WTWC.

Aside from WEAR (and possibly WPMI), they haven't had too much luck down here running things they've gotten their hands on...

So, outside of what happened in Baltimore yesterday, there are now two things going on with their subsidiary Ring of Honor Wrestling:

1) Ring of Honor COO is open to agreements with a working agreement with the WWE and possibly going to add shows to the WWE Network

Source Site: http://www.wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2016/0427/611170/roh-coo-open-to-a-working-relationship-with-wwe/

2) ROH and Sinclair are interesting in purchasing TNA

Source: http://www.wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2016/0428/611193/roh-owners-interested-in-purchasing-tna-wrestling/

My opinions:

1) A great deal if they can get a working partnership going with WWE and put shows onto the Network. They have also been very friendly and at least are on Vince's good side instead of TNA (founded by Jeff Jarrett)

2) This is a big part that concerns Wrestling Fans. Yes, TNA has been struggling to the point they got evicted from their HQ in Nashville. The owner (Dixie Carter) is pretty much going to a shoestring budget. They do garner decent ratings for POP TV (formerly TV Guide Network) but it seems the organization is on its death knell. The reason for ROH to purchase this is for the tape library and international distribution deals.

As it stands now, TNA stars can compete in ROH NON-Televised cards and iPPV's (and in fact TNA wrestlers can compete anywhere except WWE, just not on another organization's television show.)

Sinclair's NTV/KFXL deal from the Pappas trust is done.

They'll probably announce the completion of this sale tomorrow morning (4/4) when they release their Q1 earnings.

The only station that's left in the trust is WLGA in Opelika, AL. And that deal is awaiting consummation.

That's not true. They produce "The Allman Report" which is technically considered a news program...although in reality it's just a right-wing talk radio program on TV.

The real interesting thing about Sinclair's Tallahassee duopoly though is that the Fox affiliate that Sinclair owns does have newscasts but they're produced by WCTV (aka: The reason WTWC's newscasts never succeeded in the market). I'm wondering if Sinclair is going to keep the status quo or use it's newly formed duopoly to start up a news operation of their own.

That they did:

"On May 1, 2016, we closed on the previously announced acquisition of KFXL (FOX) and KHGI, KHGI-LD, KWNB and KWNB-LD (ABC) in Lincoln, Nebraska for $31.3 million."

Flagship station WBFF Fox 45 in Baltimore celebrates 45 years on air. Article includes video.

http://foxbaltimore.com/news/cover-story/wbff-celebrates-45-years-on-air

And speaking of flagships, WJLA and its sister cable channel Newschannel 8 as of recently, are also Sinclair's flagship stations

Talk about corporate spin
Well, as much as an overkill as it is, like Mrtraveler01 has mentioned, they did manage to get a news operation on a station that lacked one.

What about KQUI? Are they starting a news operation of their own?

I still think that if/when KUQI gets news, it'll be from another Corpus Christi station (likely Tegna's KIII, which was going to offer news under the previous deal that fell through, before Sinclair swooped in) or from a Sinclair station in another Texas market, such as KGBT in Harlingen. To start their own operation, they'd have to build a whole new facility since their offices are in a cramped space in a downtown high-rise.

In that case, has anyone got any info on whether KQUI will get news from KIII or a nearby Sinclair station (KABB or KGBT)?

Sinclair adds eight new stations to NewsOn: KUTV in Salt Lake City, WOAI and KABB in San Antonio, KEYE in Austin, WLOS in Asheville, WPEC in West Palm Beach, WZTV in Nashville and WSYX's sister station WTTE in Columbus.

Good to add to my list of stations with NewsON on my "Local News on Roku" topic.

Sinclair has signed a new long term affiliation contract with NBC.

http://sbgi.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NBC-Renewal-2016.pdf

Tallahassee wasn't on this list, but they're probably on a different contract than the other stations. Until the Newport deal, they were the SOLE NBC affiliate for the entire company after ComCorp acquired KETK, and WKEF as well as WICS/WICD flipped from NBC to ABC in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Despite all of the changes around Tallahassee, they're still another KDNL-like station whose only news product comes from their chief competitor, WCTV (for their acquired competition, WTLH on 40.2)
